Malwarebytes Wont Run

Recommended Posts

Let me start by saying that I get virus infections more than the average person. I have my dad (who is old and doesn't get computers) always use it, and I have to remove viruses every other week. I have always used malwarebytes to get rid of these viruses.

However, recently my computer has been a lot slower. I decided to scan it with malwarebytes but it didn't work. I could update the database, but when I scan, the computer freezes about two minutes into the scan. I have tried running in safe mode and the same problem happens. I have tried running chameleon and anti rootkit, but it is the same story with those.

I have a Gateway laptop, model # NV55C, and am running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Does this  sound like an infection?

Please read the following information first.

You're infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess, a BackDoor Trojan.

BACKDOOR WARNING

------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would advice you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

I will try my best to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

I would change all my passwords and keep a close eye on all your sensitive accounts.

Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

-----------------------------------------

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a folder. (use correct version for your system.....Which system am I using?)

Please make sure you click download buttons that look similar to this, not "sponsored ad links":

bleep-crop.jpg

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

1. Can the infection spread to other computers on the network?
I don't think so, easy way to check them would be to run RogueKiller as you did and look at the log.

2. Are the personal files on my hard drive transferable without risk?
Wait until after we clean the computer

3. Are my other machines connected to the same network safe?
Should be OK, I would check though, use RogueKiller.

At some point......
Please find these files and upload them to VirusTotal for a free scan, let me know the results (just copy back the urls)
http://www.virustotal.com/

C:\Users\Mark\acrobatreader.exe
C:\Users\Mark\teamviewer.exe

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.
Run FRST.exe and click Fix only once and wait
The tool will create a log (Fixlog.txt) in the folder, please post it to your reply.

Then......

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE

  • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

To attach a log if needed:

Note:
If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:
Internet access
Windows Update
Windows Firewall

If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the fixdamage tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot. It's located in the Plugins folder which is in the MBAR folder.

Just run fixdamage.exe.

Verify that they are now functioning normally.

OK...Next:

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please make sure you click download buttons that look similar to this, not "sponsored ad links":

bleep-crop.jpg

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1

-----------------------------------------------------

Then..................

Lets clean out any adware/spyware now: (this will require a reboot so save all your work)

  • Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
  • If there's a program you may want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaner.
  • If you're not sure, post the log for review. (all items found are adware/spyware/foistware)
  • If you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[s0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

Here is the AdwCleaner log. I followed all of the instructions, but Malwarebytes just wont complete the scan. Even if I disable my other antivirus programs, Malwarebytes freezes the computer and wont let me open anything, forcing me to reboot. Is it possible that one of my other programs are interfering with it?

Does MB run at all, what exactly happens?

Please find this file and upload to VirusTotal for a free scan, let me know the results (just copy back the url)
http://www.virustotal.com/

C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\msdmo.dll

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Re-scan with FRST and make sure the addition.txt box is checked
Attach the 2 logs.
Here are the logs.
And the problem with malwarebytes is that it wont complete a scan. I can update it, change settings, and start a scan, but no matter what kind of scan it is, it always freezes the computer about 2-3 min into the scan. This forces me to reboot the computer.
The link you posted from VirusTotal is for acrobatreader.exe not ......
C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\msdmo.dll
-----------------------------
I see you used CCleaner to clean the registry, this is not a good idea. It often causes problems and does nothing to improve performance.
Please restore both back-ups of what was cleaned:
2013-12-04 14:59 - 2013-12-04 14:59 - 00003402 _____ C:\Users\Mark\Documents\cc_20131204_145948.reg
2013-12-03 18:39 - 2013-12-03 18:40 - 00160986 _____ C:\Users\Mark\Documents\cc_20131203_183949.reg
You are also using a version that was way out of date.
--------------------------------
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.
Run FRST.exe and click Fix only once and wait
The tool will create a log (Fixlog.txt) in the folder, please post it to your reply.
Let me know.....MrC
