abbatazappa Posted November 7, 2013 ID:751010 Share Posted November 7, 2013 During startup, I get to the Windows loading screen but before reaching the "welcome" screen the monitor goes black and "no signal" is displayed. The PC is still running (I can see the light) but the power button does not function and the only option is to unplug. I restarted in Safe Mode normally, which leads me to believe it is a virus and not a hardware issue. I did a System Restore to a point about a week old which did not fix the problem. I did a second System Restore to about a month old which did fix the problem. I ran MalwareBytes system scan at that time with no detections. I upgraded to MalwareBytes Pro at that time and enable protection. All was fine for about a week (yesterday) when the same symptoms returned. It took two System Restores to fix it again, this time to a point about 6 months old. No problems so far today but obviously worried it might return. MalwareBytes system scan detects nothing. I have not done any further system restores. The requested log files were just run and follow in the next post.

MrCharlie Posted November 7, 2013 ID:751232 Share Posted November 7, 2013 That was clean...next: Please read the directions carefully so you don't end up deleting something that is good!! If in doubt about an entry....please ask or choose Skip!!!! Don't Delete anything unless instructed to! If you get the warning about a file UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic or LockedFile.Multi.Generic please choose Skip and click on Continue If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue Please note that TDSSKiller can be run in safe mode if needed. Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from HERE and save it to your Desktop.Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters. Put a checkmark beside loaded modules. A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs. Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.Check all boxes then click OK. Click the Start Scan button. The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes. If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue. Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip. If in doubt about an entry....please ask or choose SkipIf malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options. Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process. Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here. There may be 3 logs > so post or attach all of them.Sometimes these logs can be very large, in that case please attach it or zip it up and attach it.Here's a summary of what to do if you would like to print it out: If in doubt about an entry....please ask or choose Skip Don't Delete anything unless instructed to! If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue If you get the warning about a file UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic or LockedFile.Multi.Generic please choose Skip and click on Continue Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip. abbatazappa Posted November 8, 2013 Author ID:751258 Share Posted November 8, 2013 The virus symptoms have returned. The only way I can restart is in Safe Mode, and the only way to get to this forum is Safe Mode with Networking. I don't know if that changes anything but I thought I would ask before proceeding with the instructions in the previous post.

Please download and run ComboFix. The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix Please make sure you click download buttons that look like this, not "sponsored ad links": Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here. Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop. Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review. ---------->NOTE<----------If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed. MrC
abbatazappa Posted November 8, 2013 Author ID:751417 Share Posted November 8, 2013 I will not be able to run ComboFix until tomorrow at this time, because I need to print out the guide and do not have a printer on this PC. abbatazappa Posted November 9, 2013 Author ID:751836 Share Posted November 9, 2013 Well, the display has no signal again and I'm back to only being able to run in Safe Mode. I ran the AdwCleaner, which finished in a few seconds (not the "some time to complete" as was expected). There was NOTHING listed in Files/Folders. After hitting 'clean' and rebooting (in SAFE MODE), there was no log generated by AdwCleaner. I opened it again and re-ran it with exactly the same results. I'm wondering if this is a problem with my graphics card and/or driver and not a virus?
MrCharlie Posted November 9, 2013 ID:751837 Share Posted November 9, 2013 Yes, it's not due to a virus, you might want to try a clean boot in order to pin down the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 MrC

MrCharlie Posted November 10, 2013 ID:751947 Share Posted November 10, 2013 Out dated programs on the system are vulnerable to malware. Please update or uninstall them:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Adobe Flash Player 10 Flash Player out of Date! <----please uninstall from your add/remove programsAdobe Flash Player 11.9.900.117 <----OK-------------------------Adobe Reader 8 Adobe Reader out of Date! <---please check for an update if available or uninstall and download and install Foxit Reader which is less vulnerable to malware and much better than Adobe. Don't install any toolbars that may come with it (ASK Toolbar).~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A little clean up to do....Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"Copy and paste next command in the field:ComboFix /uninstallMake sure there's a space between Combofix and /Then hit enter. This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall or download and run the uninstaller)---------------------------------Please download OTC to your desktop.http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exeDouble-click OTC to run it. (Vista and up users, please right click on OTC and select "Run as an Administrator")Click on the CleanUp! button and follow the prompts.(If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.)You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process, choose Yes.After the reboot all the tools we used should be gone.Note: Some more recently created tools may not yet be removed by OTC. Feel free to manually delete any tools it leaves behind.Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.Note:If you used FRST and can't delete the quarantine folder:Download the fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.exe.Run FRST.exe and click Fix only once and waitThat will delete the quarantine folder created by FRST.The rest you can manually delete.-------------------------------Any questions...please post back.If you think I've helped you, please leave a comment > click on my avatar picture > click Profile Feed.Take a look at My Preventive Maintenance to avoid being infected again. abbatazappa Posted November 10, 2013 Author ID:751959 Share Posted November 10, 2013 I do have a question about antivirus software. Way back in the first post you asked if had any antivirus software running. I have MalwareBytes Pro with protection enabled, plus SpyWare Blaster. Is there a difference between "internet security" programs and "antivirus" programs? In other words, what else do I need (preferably free).

abbatazappa Posted November 10, 2013 Author ID:751971 Share Posted November 10, 2013 I do have one more question. I know Windows XP will no longer receive security updates starting next year. What are the options? Keep using XP and hope for the best? Install another operating system? Buy another computer?
