RPK Posted December 10, 2011 ID:503309 Share Posted December 10, 2011 Trouble: stdrt.exe appears in Task Manager process list. It consumes a lot of memory and clock cycles. Runs from C:\windows\temp\mrt*.tmp. The actual directory name changes. F-Prot antivirus, MalwareBytes, full scan (free version), and Windows Defender do not complain about it but it looks suspicious to me. Is this malware and if so how do I remove it?.DDS (Ver_2011-08-26.01) - NTFSx86 Internet Explorer: 9.0.8112.16421 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_29Run by BSM at 9:29:54 on 2011-12-10Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium 6.0.6002.2.1252.1.1033.18.3325.1673 [GMT -5:00].AV: F-PROT Antivirus for Windows *Enabled/Updated* {31B7FFC6-2716-5A4E-528D-32786E690ED2}SP: Windows Defender *Enabled/Updated* {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}.============== Running Processes ===============.C:\Windows\system32\wininit.exeC:\Windows\system32\lsm.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k DcomLaunchC:\Windows\system32\nvvsvc.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k rpcssC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k secsvcsC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestrictedC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestrictedC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcsC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k GPSvcGroupC:\Windows\system32\SLsvc.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k NetworkServiceC:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Display\NvXDSync.exeC:\Windows\system32\nvvsvc.exeC:\Windows\System32\LEXBCES.EXEC:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exeC:\Windows\System32\LEXPPS.EXEC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNoNetworkC:\Windows\TEMP\mrt1351.tmp\stdrt.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\armsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exeC:\Program Files\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\FPAVServer.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Media Server\GoogleMediaServer.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Japanese Input\GoogleIMEJaCacheService.exeC:\Program Files\Memopal\MemopalCrawler.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k NetworkServiceNetworkRestrictedc:\Program Files\Common Files\Protexis\License Service\PsiService_2.exeC:\Program Files\Iomega\QuikProtect\QpMonitor.exeC:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtsvc.exeC:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision\nvSCPAPISvr.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvcC:\Program Files\TeamViewer\Version6\TeamViewer_Service.exeC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k WerSvcGroupC:\Windows\system32\SearchIndexer.exeC:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\xaudio.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceAndNoImpersonationC:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exeC:\Users\Errol\Data\Apps\PostgreSQL\EnterpriseDB-ApachePhp\apache\bin\httpd.exeC:\Users\Errol\Data\Apps\PostgreSQL\EnterpriseDB-ApachePhp\apache\bin\httpd.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Update\1.3.21.79\GoogleCrashHandler.exeC:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exeC:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exeC:\Windows\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exeC:\Windows\RtHDVCpl.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exeC:\Program Files\Iomega\Home Storage Manager\Iomega Discovery.exeC:\Program Files\RKS Fax\rksfax_control.exeC:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\DellSupport\DSAgnt.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Media Server\GoogleMediaScanner.exeC:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exeC:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exeC:\Program Files\MagicDisc\MagicDisc.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnscfg.exeC:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exeC:\Program Files\Iomega\QuikProtect\QuikProtect.exeC:\Windows\system32\taskmgr.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Windows\system32\DllHost.exeC:\Windows\system32\DllHost.exeC:\Windows\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exeC:\Windows\system32\SearchProtocolHost.exe.============== Pseudo HJT Report ===============.uStart Page = hxxp://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&client=dell-usuk&channel=us&ibd=5070831uWindow Title = Internet Explorer provided by DellBHO: Adobe PDF Link Helper: {18df081c-e8ad-4283-a596-fa578c2ebdc3} - LDTate Posted December 14, 2011 ID:504938 Share Posted December 14, 2011 Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.Vista and Windows 7 users:1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them 2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")Download ComboFix from one of these locations:Link 1Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your DesktopDisable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective ProgramsDouble click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7. Note: If you have XP SP3, use the XP SP2 package. If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console partAs part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.Notes:1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper. 4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed. Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
RPK Posted December 14, 2011 Author ID:504975 Share Posted December 14, 2011 How it's behaving? There appears to be no c:\Windows\TEMP folder.A "C:\Windows\Prefetch\STDRT.EXE-525448BA.pf" exists.I cannot find another file on the C drive that includes the stdrt.exe name except *.url links in Favorites. Stdrt.exe does not appear in the Task Manager process list.I have not restarted the PC. When I did restart the PC after running the task previous to this one, stdrt.exe was present in the TEMP folder, but was not running; i.e., did not start spontaneously with the RPK Posted December 14, 2011 Author ID:504988 Share Posted December 14, 2011 I restarted. Stdrt.exe is back. The reason I became interested in this process is because sometimes this pretty robust, fairly recent PC is slow, and I hear the fan whirring near constantly. This prompts me to see what processe are running. Stdrt.exe uses the most memory on an otherwise idle computer and is using CPU - for what,I don't know. When I looked in on it, I don't see that Microsoft knows anything about it being an OS file, plus it is running from temp, which I find to be an odd place to run a process from if it is important and legitimate.Task Manager: Image name:stdrt.exe, user:system; CPU: 35 (but varies say 45 to zero); Memory:180MNow...C:\Windows>attrib /s *stdrt.exe*A C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\stdrt.exeC:\Windows>C:\Windows\temp>attrib /s *A C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\aviflt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\bmpFlt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\fliFlt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\Get.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\gifFlt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\jpgFlt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\KcActiveX.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\kcedit.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\kcfile.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\kclist.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\KcWebX.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\mmfs2.dllA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\pcxFlt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\pngFlt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\Registry2.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\stdrt.exeA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\tgaflt.iftA C:\Windows\temp\mrt1CC3.tmp\volume.mfxA C:\Windows\temp\flaFBF3.tmpA C:\Windows\temp\flaFF10.tmpC:\Windows\temp>
RPK Posted December 14, 2011 Author ID:504996 Share Posted December 14, 2011 It likes an Internet connection. If I issue an "ipconfig /release" the CPU goes to zero and the memory goes to 88,00K or so. If I then issue an "ipconfig /renew" it perks up to non-zero CPU and about twice the memory. It claims to be the "Windows Media Center Diagnostic Application" in the Task Manager Description.I can kill the prcess, btw, and it will stay kiled (or at least not appear in Task Manager) until a restart. This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.Log looks good Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.Using a secure browser plugin M86 SecureBrowsing makes it safe to search, surf and socialize online. This free browser plug-in displays security icons next to links on search engines and social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, so you'll know which pages are safe and which ones to avoid.•Free browser plug-in for Internet Explorer and Firefox•Real-time safety ratings•Ideal for Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn JAVA Click this link and click on the Free JAVA DownloadVisit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the siteuntil there are no more critical updates.Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.I would suggest you read:PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?.How to Prevent Malware:The full version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware could have helped protect your computer against this threat. We use different ways of protecting your computer(s): Dynamically Blocks Malware Sites & ServersMalware Execution PreventionSave yourself the hassle and get protected.
