Howdy Perth, Thanks for the tip, but that computer has no AV solution. In general, I think they're more trouble than they're worth. I'd rather have my mum being paranoid than have a false sense of security Oh, by the way, the file the MBAM scan gets stuck on is system32\xpssvcs.dll. Thanks!

I'm trying to solve mysterious goings on with my mom's computer -- it's running Vista SP1 and I think she's been careful to practice "safe computing." I installed the latest MBAM and it won't make it past a minute or so of a scan before it locks up. I've run it several times, and it locks up every time on the same file, I think. If the last file to display in the status window before locking up is important, I'll have to go over to her computer and get it in person. I've scanned the hard drive, and bad sectors aren't the problem. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something installed on the machine that shouldn't be. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
