  1. I successfully went thru the cleanup and repair (VS) instructions in the topic "Install Problems". BUT, XP is still not as it should be in 2 respects: 1. Display - right click on the desktop and select properties brings up a familiar screen...BUT without the 'desktop' tab which controls the background picture for the desktop... 2. All system drives are now visible, C D E etc., but the C: drive has a red X to the left of it rather than the disk drive symbol. How can I repair the above? Even if not malware caused i'd like to 'get back to normal' for XP. 1 Hijack and 3 MBAM logs are attached. hijackthis_12_4_08.txt mbam_log_2008_12_06__17_18_24_.txt mbam_log_2008_12_05__13_11_26_.txt mbam_log_2008_12_05__09_29_22_.txt hijackthis_12_4_08.txt mbam_log_2008_12_06__17_18_24_.txt mbam_log_2008_12_05__13_11_26_.txt mbam_log_2008_12_05__09_29_22_.txt
  2. I was successful in removing the worst problems but the following problems remain: 1. I can now see the "C:" disk but it has a red X next to it instead of a disk symbol, etc. 2. I can use the control panel to add/remove programs but some programs, like spyhunter, can't be 'removed.' 3. When I try to change the 'background' picture of the desktop I discover that the 'properties' of the desktop do not include a background tab.....only screen saver. There are probably many more discrepancies but these are the ones I noticed quickly. I reinstalled XP SP3 (i'm running XP Home) but it didn't fix any of the above. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to proceed?
  3. i followed the thread and had the same situation. i performed the same actions as documented above. i couldn't install mbam until i renamed the setup file. the install succeeded. the update of mbam/database succeeded. the full scan is running now. i'll post again when the scan is completed and i've rebooted to test. thanks to all of you for this excellent post.
  4. re previous post on workaround for av2009 blocking mbam install.... I didn't see any entry under non plug and play drivers named TDSSserv.sys I did have av2009 in a directory which I erased. I can't install MBAM at all using the corrupted XP system. When I use "Bart PE" to boot I can download MBAM setup but get the error when I try to install MBAM msvbvm60.dll not found....among others Anybody know a workaround? JimNall
