Hi MBAM folks, Friday evening I seemed to have VirusRemover 2008. Scanned with and updated MBAM, saw lots of trojan-related files. Removed them, rebooted, scanned again: no threats found. Ran TrendMicro OfficeScan as well, and it came up clean. But I'm still having Google redirects to all sorts of spammy sites, and this desktop is crawlingly slow...so, still compromised. Just now I did a new update and scan with MBAM, which still reports "No malicious items were detected." So, I will only post the HJT herein (for now). Jean, this is very odd. After my last message, I ran another HJT. Only one ctfmon process. Checked it again--same result. Tried messing about for awhile, doing the things I've been doing for the past couple days (running Firefox, running MBAM, etc) to see if something triggered a second ctfmon. No dice, still only one. I have zipped it up and will attach it over in the Log Requested thread where I put the .dll earlier. Then I need to wipe this tablet clean, so we might never know. No worries re the contribution--and I think it's a sad comment in general that you've only gotten two donations with over 3700 posts, of which I am assuming the bulk have been written to help people. Everyone wants something for nothing, and so our whole culture pays a price. (Sigh.)

Jean, you've been very helpful. After talking with an IT admin at work today, his recommendation was that I punt: nuke this tablet and rebuild it. He's got a utility for thoroughly wiping the HDD. I think if I go this route, I won't be too worried that anything made it through. I think I will rebuild this thing as a dual boot between Ubuntu (the Mint sub-distro) and XP, and make the former my main OS. Two things: (1) I am happy to zip up those ctfmon.exe processes if you would like them, before I begin to wipe this machine. Just let me know. (2) I would like to pay you for your efforts, so look for that later this evening. I will PM you after I have done so. This is a very kind service you provide. It's 6:45 Atlantic Time. Jean, below is a new MBAM log, run under a normal boot. This malware first came to my attention by doing a fake alert routine--specifically, VirusRemover 2008. But if that's "all" it was, would that typically involve a rootkit? I.e., I'm guessing that this is much worse and that VirusRemover 2008 was thrown in as a smokescreen. But you'll know far better than I. After thinking over the risk question, I would like to go ahead with trying to clean this machine as much as possible (short of nuking it) and then re-assess. Hi Jean et al, No idea how, but I seem to have picked up a trojan and rootkit. I tried MBAM numerous times in Safe Mode and it always gets rid of all but one .dll in memory. "Delete on reboot" is not enough. I would love it if someone could help. Per the pre-HJT instructions, I have made sure to use the latest Spybot S&D to remove what it can, and then I ran MBAM again (also freshly updated).
