  1. Hi exile360! I'm sorry to have brought this post back up to the forefront, but it is the only way I can actually THANK YOU for your assistance (so forgive me for that, please)...BUT...thank you very much for your assistance! P.S. I thank all of you!
  2. Hello and thanks for all of the assistance! @l YoKenny1 RE: Your statement, "I have Windows 7 64bit and I have not needed to disable avast! when installing nor updating MBAM." Until 2-3 weeks ago, I had been using Windows 2000 Pro (similar to XP) for 2 years, used Avast, and never had to disable Avast in order to install or update MBAM. I thought perhaps disabling the anti-virus was going to be another strange issue for Windows7, so thank you very much for your input! RE: Your statement, "I follow what exile360 recommends and have not had a problem with UAC enabled however I have lowered its sensitivity though." I had tested all levels and none of them solved my problem until I moved the slider all the way down to the bottom (which is not recommended); disabling it. ------------------------------------------------------------ @ exile360... RE: Your statements: "The issues you describe should not be related to UAC being enabled or disabled, it sounds like something deeper is at the heart of it and disabling UAC fixing the problems is just another symptom. I've been using Vista since it was in beta and I'm now using Vista as well as Windows 7, both with UAC enabled and have never seen any of the issues you're reporting. I would highly recommend getting your system checked to find the root cause of these issues because something deeper must be going on. Now that's not to say that you should or shouldn't enable UAC again, I understand how it can be irritating to make the extra mouse clicks to perform administrative tasks, but the other issues reported should not have anything to do with UAC." AND "But again, the issues you describe should not be related to UAC being on or off, I suspect there is something else at the heart of those issues I'm just not sure what it is." I find it amazing how so many users can have so many different ways in which to solve their problems involving the same issue; what works for one user might not work for others. By disabling UAC, I was able to solve the problems I listed above, but I do realize it is more logical to suspect I have problem with my PC. Also, if all goes according to Hoyle, then many users most likely will think I'm a wee bit weird if I think UAC actually had anything to do with solving those issues...and maybe they are right?!? All I know is that those issues were all solved "instantly" (on May 8th) after I disabled UAC, and I find "that" to be very weird. As an example of how disabling UAC solved my problem relating to just the disappearance of my downloaded videos, I found a website with 247 user comments on that subject...with almost as many different ways to solve the same problem. Some of the suggestions sounded silly to me, but I was willing to try almost anything, so I tried some of the different ways suggested but to no avail. When I tried "disabling UAC" (as a last resort), the problem was solved. Do I think that sounds logical? No...but it worked! Anyway, the comments make for a very interesting read at the following URL (Note - I changed http to hXXp): hXXp://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-6697-can-t-find-downloaded-files-usng-vista-o-s ------------------------------------------------------------ @ exile360 RE: Your statement: "Those 2 registry entries will not be removed by the cleaner, they are normally left behind..." "Normally" left behind? I realize that remnants of apps/programs can be (and are) left behind a lot, but I don't like leaving remnants left on my PC...call it a quirk of mine, if you like. My feelings are that if a program can create registry keys, then that program (no mater what it might be) should be able to remove those same keys, also. Anyway, thanks for indicating that (1)HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MBAMExt.MBAMShlExt and (2)HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MBAMExt.MBAMShlExt.1 belong to MBAM! QUESTIONS: (1) Since MBAM clean.exe didn't work for me, does Malwarebytes have any other suggestions for ridding those leftover registry items? (2) Is it safe to manually "delete" them?
  3. I re-installed Malwarebytes just fine...THANK YOU for assisting me! @ exile360... Thank you so much for responding. Please let me explain about UAC because this is very important to me... RE: Your statements, "I would very much recommend turning UAC back on as most programs these days are UAC aware, meaning they will request the permissions they require when run, but if UAC is disabled, they are automatically denied any permissions higher than that of a limited user, which can break the functionality of many programs, including MBAM." I do realize that it is recommended to keep the UAC enabled, but I had several issues happening which were frustrating and then after doing research, I discovered that disabling the UAC should help...and it did, immensely! Some of my reasons for wanting UAC "disabled" are as follows: (a)I don't want the inconvenience and annoyance of being told I need administrative privileges to perform certain actions. I am the only person using this computer, so I am the administrator and therefore with UAC enabled, I would only be taking extra steps just to carry out what I'm going to do in the first place because I'm definitely going to give myself permission to proceed with my actions. (b)With UAC enabled...I would download videos to my desktop, but I could never find them anywhere on the PC! .....Once disabled, my downloads were always found. ©With UAC enabled...a few times, Avast was never even listed in the right-click context menu, so I couldn't scan the downloaded items with Avast. .....Once disabled, Avast showed up in the context menu for scanning, again. (d)With UAC enabled...when I tried to "open" my SuperAntiSpyware to get my daily updates, I was NOT allowed to open it because I didn't have administrative privileges. .....Once disabled, I could freely and quickly open SuperAntiSpyware anytime. (e)With UAC enabled...instead of being allowed to simply click on a shortcut icon to open a program, once clicked on, I get taken to the location of the folder (even though I choose "open" in the context menu) and then I must click on the program's name there, also, before it opens up...leaving me with both the open folder/window of the area location and my newly opened program folder/window. .....Once disabled and the programs "reinstalled", I have so far been able to simply click on the SuperAntiSpyware and the SpywareBlaster shortcut icons to have those programs directly open up for me...a one-click procedure. ..........Thus the reason for wanting to uninstall/reinstall Malwarebytes - to see if I could get the same result for it, also, and it worked! (f)With UAC enabled...all of my bookmarks (except for 2 of them) had icons that were showing up as simply plain, white-looking pieces of paper. .....Once disabled, the bookmarked icons/favicons started displaying normally from the websites. QUESTION: Even though I haven't been having any problems (that I know of) with the UAC disabled, are you saying that my programs might now not be running as efficiently and/or they could become corrupted at anytime while UAC is disabled? --------------------------------------------- @noknojon... Thank you for assisting me! RE: Your statement, "Temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware." This is the first time I have disabled my Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition in order to install Malwarebytes. QUESTION: Am I always supposed to disable Avast when installing MBAM or other programs?
  4. Hi noknojon! I do not have the paid version. RE your statement: "(1) As it seems that you already installed once or twice so there should be an icon on the screen"... I no longer have an icon on my screen. RE your statement: (2) "Have YOU ever installed Malwarebytes twice prior to this - Or has your dealer installed it for you ?? Although 2 entries are not unusual"... The PC was purchased from Wal-mart; no dealer had installed Malwarebytes on it, BUT... I did install Malwarebytes "twice" on this new PC within a one-week period. It was working just fine (as far as I know) until I decided to uninstall it yesterday and then do a reinstall. I don't remember if the previous version was 1.46, but I always download the latest version and ---if this helps any: I had downloaded whatever the latest version was on April 26 to my new PC (which had no version of it preinstalled). OF NOTE is when my "set-up" PC person came back to finish set up my PC on April 29, he had deleted/uninstalled all of my applications I had installed on April 26 before I caught what he had done; he said I didn't need them! Well, that was a bit upsetting, and after he left, I discovered he had messed up some things for me on the PC and had no idea if he uninstalled those programs properly or not. However, I was able at that time (April 29) to reinstall Malwarebytes without any problem. So, yes, MBAM was installed for a 2nd time within a 1-week period before I uninstalled it yesterday. AND, yes, I know it was there because I had used it for doing manual updates...which I have done once daily for the past year or so. OK...you're wondering why I would uninstall it since it was working just fine, right? I've been frustrated that the shortcut icon wouldn't open the program up immediately when I clicked on it like "most" of the other program icons do: When I click on the icon, Windows7 takes me to the program location (when clicking "open") and then I need to click on the program, again, to get it to open up, leaving me with 2 folders on my desktop instead of simply being able to open up the Malwarebytes app all by itself when clicking the desktop shortcut. After I had disabled UAC (which was causing me a lot of problems), I uninstalled/reinstalled SpywareBlaster in hopes of getting its shortcut icon to open up directly, and it did! SO...I was hoping I would get the same results by uninstalling/reinstalling Malwarebytes, also. OF NOTE is that I did use RevoUninstaller to remove it with, but I've used RevoUninstaller for 2 years without any problems. As I said previously, when I tried reinstalling it, the computer said another version existed already and was running. Then I tried following your instructions I had discovered elsewhere in the forum (the instructions you have listed for me here, also), but after running the MBAM cleaner...BUT before going further, I had checked the registry to see if those 2 registry items were gone...but they were still there; thus, I did not proceed --- and came here instead for advice. I'm not a "techie", so I need to ask you if, indeed, those 2 MBAM registry items I listed belong to Malwarebytes OR is there an explorer "MBAM" of some sorts, also? Since I don't know the answer, I just didn't feel like simply deleting them. Ok...just before coming back here to the forum for this second time, I deleted the previously downloaded MBAM cleanup utility AND downloaded a new one. However, when I tried to use it, I received the following message: ERROR: SHGetValue failed with error code 126 That is a new alert message and I have been unsuccessful in finding out what that means. Is there other "pertinent" information I can give you that would help...or perhaps that new error code helps you?
  5. I am using HP Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit); a new PC about 3 weeks old. I uninstalled Malwarebytes, but when I downloaded and tried installing the new app, I was told that I already had a version running. I looked in the registry (very carefully!) and found 2 listings: (1) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MBAMExt.MBAMShlExt (2) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MBAMExt.MBAMShlExt.1 I then spent the afternoon searching how to solve my problem, and then found an answer to someone else's post on page 9 regarding installing/uninstalling Malwarebytes if having an issue...which I HAVE EDITED TO FIT MY VERSION NEEDS: . Please note that I "highlighted in red" above where I ended this advice. AFTER the computer restarted...I assumed those 2 registry items had been cleaned out, but I wanted to make sure before continuing any further. So I decided to check the registry first but found those 2 items still listed. I don't want to simply go ahead and finish trying installing the new app because "if" it does install, I would like to know if those 2 previous uninstalled leftovers will cause any difficulties for the PC. Also, I do realize there is the possibility of the new app, again, not installing. Suggestions will be much appreciated!
