A guy from youtube (Reversed Videos) recommended I post here about a problem I've been having with my Asus laptop running Windows 10 Home Version 20H2. I am admittedly neglectful with keeping up to date and running any anti virus stuff or what have you with this thing. It's probably 5 years old and has seen heavy use and abuse. I've had the occasional hickups and freezes during it's life where I would have to use the power button to get it to work again, however it happened late last week for the last time and now I have had no luck getting it to work for more than 5 minutes w/out freezing up constantly.
At first it would do a loop of "Diagnosing your PC" and then attempting to repair but would never get past the repair attempts where you could instead go to "Advanced Options", etc. I would constantly have to power button down and try again. Even if I did get past that it would never really improve anything. I've fixed problems in the past with youtube video help, so I tried a whole bunch of things by many different people. Nothing seemed to help. I came across "How to Remove Viruses From Your Computer" by Reversed Videos and it seemed like it was worth a try.
I started it in the evening and it ran and ran and ran for hours. It got late so I went to bed. When I looked at it in the morning it seemed to be stuck (no big surprise there!). It never even got the the malwarebytes part where he said you'd have to click a button to get it going. Let it go for over 48 hours just in case and it never did anything more. Power-buttoned-down again and upon restart it asked me to scan the disk (again), but I cancelled.
I've run scannow with a report of no issues, run dism/onlike/cleanup-image/restorehealth and it successfully ran with no reported issues. when I tried chkdsk it wouldn't let me and/or wasn't able to complete due to something I forget now what it said.
Now it keeps doing "windows updates", takes forever to boot up, and when I finally can get it going it freezes about 5-10 minutes into using it.
I'm in way over my head at this point. I have everything on it backed up, so losing data is of no concern.
Reversed Videos recommended I run a scan with FRST. I am trying to get the machine to cooperate and if/when I do I will post the folders here...
Thanks!
