  1. AdvancedSetup, Thanks for your all of your help. I ran into some problems with my main notebook and had to focus on getting it fixed first. I ended up just wiping the drive and doing a clean install on the notebook that was having problems. Thanks again.

  3. Additional attempts to fix this include: Installation of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I was able to install but it will not run, "Run-time error '372': Failed to load control 'vbalGrid' from vbalsgrid.ocx. Your version of vbalsgrid.ocx may be outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the control that was provided with your application." I have pulled the drive and scanned it with both AVG Pro 8.5 and Spyware Doctor multiple times on another computer. A few items detected, no major virus infections, mostly just tracking cookies and Adware.Gen from various applications (i.e. Musicmatch). Their was one virus found Dialer.coulomb.Dialer, but it was removed. After putting the drive back into the original computer I was able to install Spyware Doctor, run updates and scan - only tracking cookies found, then removed. Again, here is what exile360 has had me try, but to no avail.
  4. Hi, Here are the problems I am having and my original posts of what I have done so far: My original Post on the Computer Help Forum Another user (Molo5000) was having the problems, here is his list. Any differences in the problems he is having I have highlighted in color It has many problems, the source of which seems to be that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service doesn't start. As a consequence Windows Update, System Information, System Restore, User & Accounts control panel, printers, Windows Firewall, ActiveX, and many other things all don't work. I can't install anything. And when I go into Device Manager, Services, or other things like that, I can't view the properties of any items. Almost all services don't work, maybe they depend on Remote Procedure Call too? If I go into Services (only Standard view works), I can see that Remote Procedure Call is set as "Automatic" startup type, but is not "Started" at all. Any attempt to start it manually results in the error "Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is Denied". 1. Windows Firewall does not start up as it used to. - Tried turning it on through the Control Panel - Windows Firewall. Error Message: "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service not running. Do you want to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service?" If i select Yes, I get "Windows cannot start the ICS service." - Same error occurs when I go through the Security Center. - Trying to start the service manually results in this error: "Could not start the windows firewall connection sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start." 2. McAfee security center was originally installed on the machine, it is active but cannot be opened. I have tried to install AVG Free 9 but it will not install because of the following errors: a: Initialization: Warning Windows Firewall activity checking failed. The RPC server is unavailable. b: Installation: Error: MSVC Redistributables installation failed. Installation of AVG can not continue. 3. Can't get to a Services properties. I can click properties button and do it by the right click menu but nothing happens. 4. Can't copy and or move files and paste in explorer windows. 5. Can't open an IE, no Network Icon on the Taskbar. 6. If I do Minimize any open window, it does not appear in Taskbar, so I need to use the alt-tab key to bring it back. 7. Can't drag and drop icons on the desktop or in any explorer windows. I can select them but can't move them around. 8. No matter how what I open, it does not show up on the task bar. task bar has the Clock, Quick Launch, and a whole bunch of blank space in between. If I had 6 applications up and running I'd only know of one of them due to it being up. Other than that, you have to alt-tab to see what's open. 9. System Restore does not work. Just does not work. Trying to open it give the message "System Restore is not able to protect you computer. Please restart your computer, then run System Restore again." If you try to start the service manually, you get: "Could not start the windows firewall connection sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start." 10. No Sound, the only noise is the old school PC speaker (BEEP). When I view in the "Services", only 2 programs are running. Event Viewer, and Plug and Play. The other are not running or started. When I tried to start manually (like Cryptographic service, RPC, Remote Registry, Machine Debug Manager, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Security Center, IPSEC Services, Print Spooler, Server, and more...), I'm only got an Error message. ("Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start" and or "Error 5: Access is Denied"). I can right click the file, wanting to open the properties, but when I click the properties button, nothing happens. I tried to use gpedit.msc, it open and I can view and browse inside, the problem is I can't modified at all. It's seam that it is locked. I've done the chkdsk, it works fine. But not Windows Disk Defragmenter, it can be open but doesn't work, either analyzing or defragmenting. I have been able to install and run Auslogics Disk Defrag, Registry Cleaner and Registry Defrag Thanks
  5. I booted to safe mode and was able to run it successfully from the Admin account. After reboot there was no change, same error message when trying to manually start RPC .
  6. I ran ResetDefaultPerms from a jumpdrive (I cannot copy/paste or drag/drop on the machine). It completed, restarted in normal mode and I was able to do the .reg fix. Restarted the machine, RPC did not start automatically and I still get the same "Error 5: Access is denied" when I try to start it manually. Any additional thoughts? Thanks
  7. Yes I did run it while in safe mode. On a user admin account, not the true administrators account, could that make a difference?
  8. exile360, I am having the same issue as molo500, I have replied with the results of the registry file you posted. For some reason it got bumped to a separate thread http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.p...+Call+%28RPC%29 Thanks again.
  9. exile360, I am having the exact same symptoms as molo5000 on a Dell Inspiron E1505 running XP media center with SP3. After booting to safe mode and attempting to run the reg file you posted I receive the following error: "Cannot import F:\APPS\RPC_Fix\Crypto+RPC Fix Final (Run in Safe Mode).reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes." I have tried removing some of the entries from the reg file in order to wee what was actually able to be entered successfully. Here is what I have found out. The upper and middle entries through the following section (seventh from bottom) install without error. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs] "ServiceSidType"=dword:00000001 "FailureActions"=hex(3):00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,0 0,00,60,ea,00,00 "Type"=dword:00000010 "Start"=dword:00000002 "ObjectName"="NT Authority\\NetworkService" "ImagePath"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,2 5,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,73,00,76,00,63, 0 0,68,00,6f,00,73,00,74,00,20,00,2d,00,6b,00,20,00,72,00,70,00,63,00,73,00,73,00, 0 0,00 "Group"="COM Infrastructure" "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "DisplayName"="Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" "Description"="Provides the endpoint mapper and other miscellaneous RPC services." By including the next entry in the reg file: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_RPCSS\0000\Control] "ActiveService"="RpcSs" This error is given: "Cannot import F:\APPS\RPC_Fix\Crypto+RPC Fix Final (Run in Safe Mode)_edited.reg: Error accessing the registry." By removing the above listed entry (sixth from bottom) and the next two entries (fifth and fourth from the bottom) the last three entries are able to be written to the registry without error. After rebooting there is no change in the system, all original symptoms listed by molo5000 are still present. Any additional help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
