mac settings - malware protection off by default

I turned on real-time protection for a few users. But it still also does scheduled scans - is that correct? Can we turn off scheduled scans i real-time is on? -
under policies on the cloud console, mac settings, malware protection is off by default. What are the consequences of turning it on?
