  1. I have done step 1 (download the attached fixlist and run FRST) But I'm running into a problem on step 2. Thankfully, I can now run Malwarebytes on Normal Mode, but every time I select "Scan for Rootkits" and run a Threat Scan, my laptop gets a Blue Screen and it restarts. I've tried it three times and it still blue screens and restarts. Then I unchecked the "Scan for Rootkit" box, tried running a Threat Scan and it completed successfully. Should I continue with the other steps? Or should I try to get "Scan for Rootkit" to work before moving on? Sorry that my response was kinda late and thank you very much for your detailed response and help
  2. Hello,I use a Windows 10 laptop that has recently been infected with a virus. This is what I believe caused the issue. I lent my friend my laptop, he unknowingly plugged in an infected USB stick into the laptop, copied all the files from the USB to my laptop. One of the files he copied into my laptop was a shortcut folder with a completely normal name like "University First Year Classes". He double clicked on this shortcut folder on my laptop. Now I believe this shortcut is what caused the virus to enter my laptop. When I "right click > properties" on this shortcut folder, this is what it says in the "Target" box: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c s^tar^t Files.bat & e^xplore^r "Files\University of Alberta First Year" I have also attached a screenshot of the properties for this shortcut folder so you get a better idea. As for what the virus is actually doing, it is not allowing me to open or interact with any Windows 10 apps. E.g. I can't open my settings app. I can't interact with any of the icons in the notification tray, like Night Light, Brightness, Bluetooth etc. The shortcut folder is currently on my desktop (didn't want to delete it just yet in case it might come useful for solving this issue). I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes but after installing it, it does not run (virus is probably preventing it to run). So I tried to open Chameleon, got malwarebytes to run inside chameleon, scanned the system but it unfortunately found 0 threats. I tried both the "Threat Scan" and "Custom Scan" but it showed 0 threats for both. (In Custom Scan, whenever I chose the tickbox "Scan for rootkits" my laptop got a blue screen and it had to restart. So i just left that unchecked and scanned my C drive which took an hour and thirty mins.) Running Malwarebytes in Safe Mode also didn't work. I then saw that a similar question was asked on these forums and got some help from that. https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/216684-problem-with-filesbat-virus/ I then downloaded and installed Farbar Recovery Scan Tool but again, after installing it, it did not run. Then I tried running FRST in Safe Mode and it successfully ran and created two files, "FRST.txt" and "addition.txt". I have also attached both of these with this message. Kindly let me know as to what I should do now. I really have to get rid of this virus or whatever it is that has infected my laptop. Thank you for your help. Addition.txt FRST.txt
