(I incorrectly posted this in the wrong forum - reposting over here, I hope, correctly) Apparently, the powershell/dllhost infection has hit many people here and I have found, to my chagrin, that I am one of them. It has taken place on my laptop, which is now safely powered off - I am posting from a clean desktop. Rather than trying to clean the infection, I've decided to "take advantage" of the situation (so to speak), upgrade the hard drive in my laptop to an SSD and do a clean system install. I've ordered a replacement drive. So when all is said and done, I'll not only have a clean laptop, I'll have a faster one. Now here's my concern. I need to pull the data off the infected drive. I have an enclosure I can mount the drive into. The data that I need to copy is pretty much all media files (photos, movies, and music) and documents. My understanding is that those items are generally safe to copy over, but I want to be sure that I don't end up just infecting the new drive. Of course, before I copy over anything, I will make sure that the system is updated and running anti-virus software (I get McAfee from my ISP and use the free Malwarebytes as a supplemental scanner). While I understand that nothing is 100%, what is the best way to insure that I can copy the data over safely? Thanks.
