In my case, F-secure was the reason. When I turned it off, I was able to start Malwarebytes just fine. (Perhaps other antivirus have the same problem?)

Hello, I recently installed the new version of malwarebytes... It worked fine after it was just installed, but after a reboot, it pops up with the "unable to connect the service" and you are not even able to uninstall it... I came across this post and noticed someone mentioned F-secure... I tried turning off F-secure and then tried to start Malwarebytes ... it worked started just fine. So obviously F-secure is blocking malwarebytes for some reason.
