Trial stopped working 2nd Day?

I fresh installed ver 11/13/2011 (yesterday). Reboot and started trial (clean full scan, with one reported FP that your forum Dev replied would be corrected in the next update). I also did 3 clean on-demand anti-malware scans.

Up until now I liked MBAM MUCH better than my old Buggy Avira Premium v12 (uninstalled pre-mbam & ran their registry cleanup tool/CCleaner...).

Problem?- A couple of hours ago I had a hard system freeze while surfing with IE9 (also had a 1sec power drop 30min prior & all applications


Monitor was on, but mouse & keyboard were dead. HD was still making noise.

Hard shutdown, and 5min after startup I got an MBAM pop-up saying-

"Error Code 02

Failed to open..."

I waited with No-activity for 30min, and did a reboot.

I then noticed that the MBAM icon was gone from my taskbar?

I opened MBAM desktop/Protection... & Start Trial box was back? I clicked on it & it said I have 0 days left on my trial (only 2nd day)/Ended?

Q?- How do I get the MBAM Trial back?

Welcome to MBAM.

Until one of the MBAM staff or experts stops by, a couple of things:

First: MBAM is NOT an anti-virus and is not a substitute for such a program.

MBAM is a very robust anti-malware program that is designed to provide layered protection alongside a standard anti-virus.

So, it would be highly advisable to install an anti-virus -- if not Avira, then another from among the many free and paid options available.

Q?- How do I get the MBAM Trial back?

It sounds as if something became corrupted during your power drop?

The easiest way to restart the MBAM PRO free trial is probably to do a clean reinstall:

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here.
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so (very important!).
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here.
  • Launch MBAM and set the Protection and Registration (if using the PRO version).
  • Then go to the UPDATE tab (if not done during installation) and check for updates.
  • Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray (if using the PRO version).
  • Now set up any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications. Then restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQs here, or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

One of the pros might have some additional suggestions for you.

Thank you for the instructions as my MBAM pro Consumer download is not working well!?-

It takes 1min 45sec to show on taskbar on startup (fully defraged fast computer/ high speed cable internet), and blocks any setting changes I try to make to IE9... I have to disable protection before making Any system changes too (defrag.../In ignore list...)..

I am trying to use MBAM in place of anti-virus, but it's not working well for that.

I tried MSE with MBAM protection disabled, but it also blocks most everything (Hassle!- can't disable it from taskbar).

Q?- Would it be better to run clean.exe in Safe Mode...?

Q2?- Would it be better to install the free version & register after reboot..., or...?

Q3?- Ant suggestions on an AV?

Thanks for the update.

I am just a home user and your particular situation is starting to sound a bit overly complicated for my level of expertise.

So, I think we may need to wait for an MBAM staffer or other expert to provide some assistance.

Short answer:

Q1 Things do not appear to be working properly on your system - MBAM should not be interfering with anything, nor taking so long to load at startup.

Q2 You should not need to run mbam-clean in safe mode.

Q3 Just follow the instructions exactly as they were given in my last post.

Q4 MBAM normally works just fine with all major AV and firewall products, both from MS and 3rd-party vendors -- it's really up to you, so long as you only have *1* AV and *1* firewall program.

Long answer:

My concerns:

  • The power drop you experienced may have corrupted your OS and/or program files?
  • The hard freeze you first described suggests corruption and/or perhaps software conflicts?
  • From your posts, it sounds as if you have tried a number of different security products, including several different AVs & firewalls, MBAM, and perhaps others -- remnants of these on your system could be creating conflicts and preventing them from installing and working correctly?
  • We probably need some more detailed info about your system in order to best advise you - you might even want to run some diagnostics on your hard drive and even on your OS, if you are having problems with crashes, freezes and instability?

If you have not yet done so, please follow all the instructions in my earlier post, step-by-step, including setting up the reciprocal exclusions between your AV and MBAM.

If that doesn't work, then we might need to ask for help from someone more experienced than I am.

It may require more detailed info about your system, as well as a "clean slate" approach to your AV, firewall and other security apps (including MBAM).
