You need to uninstall the Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 and if you want the reader install the newer version 9

Please don't just update, remove the old one, then install the new one after a reboot.

(older versions were known to have code that was susceptible to attack from Malware just like older versions of Java)

Start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

AS - I removed Adobe Reader without a problem. However I'm not able to install the latest version 9. I get HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run\optionalcomponent\MSFF - I don't have sufficient access to that key.

I installed FoxIt for now.

Doesn't look like you removed the JAVA. Please go into Control Panel, Add/Remove as shown above and remove ALL versions of JAVA

Please don't install any version of Java until we're done and then you can install the latest.

Start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.kazaa.com/us/help/guide_installing.htm

Everything else was going well until Step 7- ComboFix. It hung. I was able to Cntrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Mgr which showed that ComboFix wasn't using any CPU. I restarted the machine.

Before ComboFix stopped, it had gotten to Completed Stage_50.

c:\Windows\System32\"" is not recognized as an internal or external command ...

I don't want to go any further because you said to not run ComboFix more than once. So I'm waiting for instructions.

Thank you,

AS - no more worries - the machine is out of here. Customer needed it back. MBAM didn't flag the registry entry.

So. I'm hoping things are OK. It was actually running very nicely.

Thanks for all your help. I'm always amazed at the knowledge the malware experts possess.

Hi Tony,

Sorry about that. Seems the Combofix had a build with some invalid code. It's been fixed now but since you no longer have the PC not much we can do about it.

Okay I'll close this post then and leave you with this for future reference.

I'll leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • Check Turn off System Restore.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note 1:

If you are running Windows XP
SP2
, you should upgrade to
SP3
.

Note 2:

Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.

The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
