my apologies if this is in the wrong form (or if I shouldn't be asking this here at all)

I occasionally get asked to help someone who is dangerously close to the "Do you still have the box it came in?" level of computer use. (off-topic: HAH! I knew that story was too unbelievable to be made up :-p)

Recently some of the questions have been about spam email and it appears they have been very close to clicking on ones that would be Very Bad

The problem (to me) is their email provider doesn't do a good job of scanning for spam/phishing 100% of the time combined with the fact that this person is still using Outlook Express (XP SP3) and I won't be able to get them to change (especially not getting a new email account).

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a (free) antispam product for Outlook Express that would:

(a) be better than nothing

and more importantly

(b) is easy (VERY easy) for a low level of computer knowledge user to understand/use.

in advance, thanks for any replies

i dunno ...

not to promote or hawk any particular one , i have always been happy with :

my hotmail account (and the filtering they do)

the anti-spam/phishing tools and and associated online security features of AVG internet security 2012 and ESET smart security .

mind you , my antivirus/spam/etc are the "paid for" flavors .

yeah , many of the email services provided by an "ISP" are not exactly top notch . <_<

there are some not-so-good types out there .

I have been using Mailwasher Pro for many years on all PC platforms (XP, Vista, Win7) and have a lifetime license on both rigs.

Although I don't use OE or Outlook, I'm sure it's compatible with both of these email clients.

They have excellent support, including a user forum.

Very powerful spam filtering (perhaps a bit overly engineered for folks like me who get little spam), but also excellent for previewing/scanning/filtering large volumes of emails.

There is a free trial, and there are several licensing options for the paid version.

Single most important "productivity" application I use and the primary reason I haven't switched to Mac (there is a Mac-compatible legacy version, but current version now pretty much a PC-only program).

Ive used a few webmail brands, Yahoo had tons of spam, gave up on them and Gmail has been awsome using their own filter. I do use Gmail via IMAP in Thunderbird (which is similar to OE or Outlook) in many ways.

Never got interested in using mail@(ISP provider).com cause if you ever change ISP's you are all tangled up.

100% agree with this. Awesome program that will throw ALL SPAMS away from your inbox.
