So I supposed I should start by explaining what happened. :)

This particular day I decided to use Mozilla Firefox for the first time since I read some news article about IE. I had Mozilla Firefox from before but I never used it and I didn't know that you were supposed to update it so maybe that's where I went wrong. So, I was on another forum and I decided to click a youtube link (other people posted about the video so it's not from going to youtube). So it directed me to youtube and it told me I needed to dl flashplayer or something so I clicked it and that's when everything started going wrong.

I got a pop up saying my computer wasn't protected from my task bar (?) that my firewall was turned off. I don't exactly remember what happened at this time because I was freaking out. I do remember that I got a pop up from some anti virus program I had never seen before. It said my computer had 2 trojans and it wanted me to pay money for the program. I assumed it was just something I had on the computer (my work computer) that I had never seen before so I clicked it wondering what it was. Then I exited it and it popped up again. After that, my computer pretty much froze. I remember seeing 2 windows pop up. They looked like the MSDOS windows .. not sure if i'm making any sense.

So I restarted my computer and it blue screened. I restarted to try and get into safe mode but it wouldn't let me so I had to shut off my computer as windows was loading so that I could get into safe mode. In safe mode I decided to scan (it didn't find anything) and I even tried resetting my computer to an earlier date. It wouldn't let me. The next button wouldn't work. Back and cancel worked just fine but whenever I clicked next .. it would click but wouldn't do anything. So I decided to check Mozilla since it seems to "save" the last pages you were at. I noticed there was a new tab and a website I never went to called hit-traff.com. Sorry this is so long .. i'll cut it short. I finally got rid of the blue screen and got pop ups from my NOD32 saying there were 2 suspicious files one was called seneka with a bunch of numbers and the other I don't remember. I scanned with Malwarebytes and here is the first log

So then on Saturday I came back to work and turned the computer on to have those 2 same windows pop up again only this time I read the bar and it says WIN32. I exited both because once again .. I freaked out. :)

I left the computer scanning and came back Monday morning to find this

I scan every morning now and I haven't turned my computer off since then. I'm still worried that it's still on my computer because I check my bank and my work bank here. I'm really sorry for the extremely long post but I have posted this on my other forums and no one seems to be able to help me. Thanks again for any help. I appreciate it.

Also, one more thing... I found the one suspicious file that NOD32 picked up. The name of it was rasesnet.tmp. I'm afraid to turn my computer off in case it blue screens again or something. I really can't afford to lose anything on this computer.

Honestly, i'm not too sure what trojans do but someone told me that they go through your computer and send back personal information ie banking, email, pp stuff to the writer. I really can't afford to have all my boss' money stolen because of a virus. Please help. I need to know that my computer is clean. Once again sorry for the multiple posts ..

Hello Meenuh and Welcome to Malwarebytes

Please run the following. When posting logs please post the full log and do not use the Quote or other tags, thanks.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your
DESKTOP
:
how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE!!:

You must save and run
ComboFix.exe
on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.

Also,
DO NOT
click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:

Note:

The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt
    along with a
    new HijackThis log
so we may continue cleaning the system.

Then post back that log. When replying please use the ADDREPLY and not the REPLY button.

Yay. I actually got a reply. Thank you so much! I'm not sure if I did this right because I disabled NOD32 following the directions but it kept saying it was still on so I just ended the process on task manager. So anyways, here is the log. Sorry about the quotes and what not on the earlier post. If you need the full log for malwarebytes let me know I can post those too. Thank you again! :)

Also, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my recent infections but I noticed a couple things. When I first got the infections.. I usually have thise adobe update that pops up and I just always say remind me later. Well, that started coming out in Korean. Today, I restarted my computer for the first time since Saturday and I noticed that my Quickbooks date format on the invoices has changed.

I also had another question ... I recently sent a file to my boss' laptop (an excel file) is it safe to assume that anything I send out will not transfer the virus along to another computer? I just want to be absolutely sure. Thanks again.

Sorry, I thought I answered you already about the sending of files. You must assume that any files you send out are infected until your system is cleaned.

Please update your Anti-Virus to the latest definitions and then do a FULL SCAN and let me know if it finds anything or not.

It will probably take it a few hours to do the scan.

Well based on all the current scans the system appears to be clean now.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint Manager and Media Player

Viewpoint Manager

As long as the computer appears to be running okay now and there are no longer any signs of an infection it seems to be clean now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • Check Turn off System Restore.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster

Install WinPatrol

here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note 1:

If you are running Windows XP
SP2
, you should upgrade to
SP3
.

Note 2:

Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.

The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.

To answer your PM question. Yes a complete computer rebuild would be cleaner, safer but often not a choice for users. The scans all come back clean now and say there is no infection found anymore so you should be okay.
