Maywarebytes will not open, even in safe mode, google sends to ad sites, fake firewall messages, computer will not sleep.

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm having a problem; malwarebytes will only start for a few seconds the first time I try to open it after turning on my laptop before automatically closing. Any subsequent attempts to re-open lead to the error message 'windows cannot access the specified device path or file you may not have appropriate permissions to access the item.' When I try to access Malwarebytes in safe mode/safe mode + networking the same thing also happens.

Attempting to open pages in firefox that aren't 'main' websites (for example major news agencies, facebook, IMDb, wikipedia ect) just open up advertisement.

Also upon loading firefox i get what are most probably fake (they've never come up before) 'Microsoft Security Alert' warnings telling me 'Windows firewall has blocked some of the features of ______ on all public and private networks.' Then asks me if I wish to access them or not.

They look like this;

tumblr_lslvj2pjx61r4p4l5o1_500.png

and the follwing 3 messages came up this time;

tumblr_lslvgfCcVH1r4p4l5o1_500.png

but other messages have appeared in the past.

I get the same warnings in safe mode + networking, but although I have access to the internet in normal mode I do not in safe mode +networking. Instead a message comes up saying 'The proxy server is refusing connections. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connecions.' So the virus appears to be blocking me using the internet in this mode.

My computer will no longer go into sleep mode either; I have used the 'computer', 'manage', 'events veiwer' to look this problem up as it is a critical error and the general log states 'The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.' when I go to details it says the following in xml mode; - System

Hello Hannah,

Unfortunately you have a nasty rootkit on your computer. Please read the following first.

BACKDOOR WARNING

------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would advice you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

COMBOFIX

---------------

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Query_RC.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

RC_successful.gif

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Thank you so much for coming back to me so fast! I really do appriciate this.

The log is as follows, but now firefox shows the proxy message in normal mode that it only showed in safe mode + networking previously. I am currently in IE.

Also I'm curious to have your advice (which I will not get mad about if it doesn't work out in my circumstance or use it against you leagally) about what you would do about a complete re-boot in my situation? I'm asking as you are obviously well versed in this, while I only have a basic knowlage of viruses. I use my laptop mostly for fun, but also online banking and internet shopping. I have done neither of the latter two on this machine since I How likley do you think this virus is to be lingering on my machine, and if it returns to collect information is that likley to come with all of these symptoms or no warning?

Hi again,

The chance that the developer of the malware that infected your computer will actually "return" to collect personal data is slim. This rootkit infects thousands of machines with the purpose of using them in their botnet (it doesn't pay off to spend time to see if there is any data of interest on any of the personal computers that are infected for a malware developing team). However, theoretically it is possible to do just that.

This rootkit had infected a couple of files, which have been deleted. You will need to reinstall the applications using these files (Bonjour, iPod, Bluetooth and Samsung software).

CF-SCRIPT

-------------

We need to execute a CF-script.

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Start > Run and in the box that opens type notepad and press enter. Copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:56667

Firefox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\users\Hannah\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\s77pm2sj.default\
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 127.0.0.1
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 56667
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.type - 1

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Hi Elise,

Thank you for the advice on that, it's been very helpful to me. I probably won't do a complte restart.

The log for the CFScript is as follows;

That looks better. Next lets see if any files need permissions restored.

We need to scan the system with this special tool:

* Please download and save:

Junction.zip

* Unzip it and place Junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).

* Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

I know my questions must be annoying but does the virus removal mean i am no longer part of the botnet, meaning that I can't be used to DoS and send spam ect, & if my information was not 'harvested' (so to speak) already the owner would tecnically have to into my machine to hunt for data instead of the virus logging it for 'him', but wouldn't be able to use my lappy to do ill? Or do they just hack in and can still do as they would like? Does what we've done just mean the physical symtoms are gone, and my data (like key-strokes or passwords)are no longer being automatically 'logged', but basically the bot net owner could still do whatever they wamt with my machine.

Sorry to ask, I just have a very limited understanding of all of this.

Kind regards,

Hannah

Hi Hannah,

The actual infection is gone now (we're just cleaning up what is left). This means that your computer is no longer part of a botnet. The only problem remaining is that there is a "hole" in your Windows system structure, caused by the backdoor capability of the rootkit. As explained this vulnerability may or may not be exploited in the future.

Please download GrantPerms.zip and save it to your desktop.

Unzip the file and depending on the system run GrantPerms.exe or GrantPerms64.exe

Copy and paste the following in the edit box:

c:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\Installer\mcinst.exe

Thanks, I've run that and it went well. My computor operations have returned to normal; I'm back on firefox and can place my laptop onto sleep if needed. I can access Malwarebytes again so automatically did a scan and it found 7 'backdoor.bot' virus parts so I removed them. It's created the following log and now i'm due to resart my machine;

Hi Hannah,

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:

  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
    If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
    If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.

Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7.
  • Look for "JDK 7 (JDK or JRE).
  • Click the "Download JRE" button at the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Select "Windows x86 Offline" and click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe

    [*]Save it to your desktop

    [*]Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

    [*]Uninstall all older versions of Java (any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE or J2SE in the name).

    [*]Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

    [*]Install the newest version by double clicking (run as Administrator for Windows Vista/Seven) the downloaded file.
