hello all,

after a few days of trying to resolve this problem on my own with the help of another, less technical forum, i have been lead here. I didn't notice i had a problem until i was getting these no disk errors ever minute or so. I researched it and corrected the problem, but while i was correcting the problem, one of the solutions was to check what processes were running and end them, so i had to access my task manager. when i wanted to do that it said that the function was locked by an administrator. well, this is my personal pc and i am the administrator, so i didn't really know what was going on. i researched that too and corrected the problem by editing the value from 1 to nothing in the registry. well, while doing that i was running anti-virus scan and it was pulling up three viruses, shown below:

found.jpg

when i tried to solve that problem, i also noticed that the 'all programs' tab on my start menu was missing, as shown below:

noprograms.jpg

once i saw that someone suggested running kaspersky (i think it's called) off a bootable cd, so i did and it identified the problems and said it was going to remove them, but didn't. i have ad-aware, spybot s&d, antivir pe, malwarebytes, and hijackthis. they all have scanned my computer, identified the problem, but were unable to remove it.

well, that pretty much sums up my problems, so i guess i list the logs now.

(oops, posting from other computer, have to post them from pc. hang on one second.)

  • Root Admin

Please try running these tools to fix that.

  • Download FixPolicies.exe by Bill Castner and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on FixPolicies.exe to run it.
  • Click on Install. It will create a folder named FixPolicies on your desktop.
  • Open the FixPolicies folder.
  • Double click on Fix_policies.cmd to run it. Command Prompt will open and close quickly this is normal.
  • Reboot your computer after it runs
  • This fix may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes at your next startup. You can safely run the utility again.
  • Note: some malware will block the running of this tool. So if you cannot run Fixpolicies, then, RENAME the EXE file to something like Mytool.exe and then run it.

Nothing, my fault. You're on Vista and Vista works differently.

Let me review some things and I'll get back to you. In the meantime please run the following one more time.

Aside from these Window options being blocked is there any other sign of an infection anymore?

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

[*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

[*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

as far as me seeing something else besides the 'all programs' tab missing... everything else seems to be working fine now. none of the scanners are picking up those three files anymore and i can still access my task manager.

You need to remove ALL old versions of JAVA and only have 6 build 11 installed.

Also update your Adobe Acrobat Reader to version 9

I'm assuming you don't want this on all your IE Windows, if you do then don't remove it. HELLO WORLD i am VB

Close ALL open browsers and chat programs

Then start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = HELLO WORLD i am VB
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfigs] C:\Windows\RUNDLL64.dll.vbs
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

Then delete this file C:\Windows\RUNDLL64.dll.vbs

Download this file to fix the All Programs issue. You will need to use the RunAs Admin and allow it to merge with the Registry.

okay, so i checked both R1 and O4 and i guess it deleted them. was i supposed to delete it manually somewhere, or were your directions of "Then delete this file C:\Windows\RUNDLL64.dll.vbs" just reiterating that it was deleted by HT?

i also tried to update Acrobat, but it could only update to the version shown below:

no9.jpg

how do i go about removing all old versions of JAVA? i only found one entry in my add/remove menu.

and finally, when i went to right click on the 'NoStartMenuMorePrograms.reg' this is what i had options for... no run as admin.

That is because you've installed WinRAR. You need to extract the file first to a folder, then double-click on it and it should ask for permissions to change and allow it. Then restart the computer and let me know if it's working now.

Your Java shows as this version 1.5.0_09 in the logs. The newest version is 1.6.0_11

Download this application for assistance with removing old versions and getting the new version.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

You're quite welcome.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-VISTA

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon.
  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Uncheck
    All drives

  • Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply".

  • Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon
  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Checkmark All drives
that were selected previously then click "Apply".

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

(Vista users, you must ensure that any program versions downloaded are Vista compatible
BEFORE
installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Enable automatic Windows Update on your system in Control Panel, or at least manually scan each week for updates.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic well and this is a must. I recommend
Comodo Firewall Pro
