Possible Browser Highjack?

Little

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a curious browser behaviour that malwarebytes doesn't seem to pick up. When I do a google search, and I hover the mouse over a google search result url, the status bar at the bottom of the window will display the url just as google has displayed it. However, when I go to single click the link ... and not release the mouse button, the status bar at the bottom of the window will change the url like this:

http://ad2.doubleclicker.net/c.php?url=http://<whatever the google search result url was>

It will occasionally redirect me somewhere. But, other times and most of the time it will do nothing. For example, I did a search for adaware earlier, and the click took me to a page that wasn't lavasoft's portal.

I ran a malwarebytes scan and I also did a hijack log which I will post below. The malwarebytes scan showed no results, and I can't find anything on hijack either.

Hello Little.

This is a minor annoyance that we can remedy pretty quickly. There is a tool to immediately remove it, but I'd like to review and make sure of your version so that we can make sure that MBAM will remove it properly in the future as well.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from one of these 3 locations

1 http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds

2 http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

3 http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

Disable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.

Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

When done, DDS.txt will open.

Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

[*]Save both reports to your desktop.

Please include the following logs in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Attach.txt

Hello, and thank you for your response!

Unfortunately, in my absence my roommate has already taken the liberty and removed it. I believe they used some kind of third party program. I believe they said something about it being goored? Anyhow, I hope malware is able to pick it up in the future since I really malware B)

  • If and only if you are prompted to download a new version of Combofix, reply NO .

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Please watch Combofix as it runs, as you may see messages which require your response, or the pressing of OK button.

IF

you should see a message like this:

Rookit_found.gif

then, be sure to write down fully and also copy that into your next reply here and then await for my response.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the
C:\ComboFix.txt
in your next reply.

-------------------------------------------------------

A caution -
Do not run Combofix more than once.

Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled.

If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light.

If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

STEP08

IF

and only
IF
the Combofix has worked without exceptions, only then, do the following. IF it has exceptions, then please provide all details and put that in a reply pronto, and STOP, and await my reply.

Only if Combofix has a good finish:

I'm going to have you get and run a special tool. It will hopefully take out most remains of this beast. Keep in mind that not all files I list here will be found on your system; so do not be alarmed. This is a general-type list of typical infectors.

Hello,

I finished step 1, step 2, step 3, step 4 (it seemed to put out a log file to the root directory), step 5, and step 6.

However, with step 7 in regards to combofix ... It did see that there was no Windows Recovery Console, and downloaded it. I clicked yes to have the Windows Recovery Console installed. What happened next was that after awhile combofix gave me no prompts saying that it had finished installing or anything to that affect. I closed the combofix window, and restarted combofix. I clicked no to upgrading combofix (it had asked me earlier the first time it ran). Then it said it would start cleaning, so I'm guessing that it did manage to install the Windows Recovery Console, since it didn't prompt me to download it again or anything.

However during the scanning process it seems to have hung. It reached a point where it is listing things like,

Completed Stage_1

...

Completed Stage_50

After that, it prints two new lines to the command line and says,

"Deleting Files:"

"C:\windows\system32\TDSSblat.dat"

"'C:\windows\system32\'" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

And that's pretty much it. It's not done anything for the past 15 or so minutes, and I don't see any hard disk activity. Oh, and I've rebooted the machine just now. I hope that is ok. As per the list of steps, I've not done step 8 since Combofix didn't seem to go without a hitch.

Hello,

I'm afraid I've run into the same problem. Here's what I've done so far since the last post. I did click on start, run and did type combofix /u. I had forgotten that by this time, I had already re-enabled McAfee on access scan, and it said it had detected and deleted something. C:\32788R22FWJFW\PSEXEC.CFEXE to be exact.

I googled it, and I found that the message popped because my anti virus was turned on. So I went to turn it off, but by then combofix said it had uninstalled itself. To make sure combofix was indeed gone, I clicked start, run, then typed in combofix. Windows responded saying that no such file existed. I looked at my desktop and it wasn't there either. I also checked for c:\QooBox\LastRun but found no such folder.

So then I went ahead and downloaded combofix from the links above, and I ran it once more. It did not ask to download the Windows Recovery Console. Combofix backed up some files, and then it started scanning.

Combofix again reached a point where it was doing the Completed Stage_XX scans, and it once again reached Stage_50. However, this time it only said, "'C:\windows\system32\'" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

This time, though, I decided to just come back later. So I left the machine for roughly an hour and a half and returned. I had to move the mouse a little bit to see my screen when I returned, since my monitor will shut off after 15 minutes if its idle. When my screen showed up, it was still at that one line saying 'C:\windows\system32\' was not recognized as an internal or external command.

I'm sorry for the trouble. I've been looking at other people's posts here, and they don't seem to have any problems with combofix. Yet, this is the second time for me.

On another note, I'm looking at the root directory and I see a few new folders.

c:\combo-fix

c:\combofix

c:\qoobox\ (which I imagine returned when I ran combofix)

c:\cmdcons

just thought i'd mention that.

Hello again,

I followed the instructions and it didn't give me any options where I could select "2." It just gave me two pop up windows. The first one asked if I would like to download a newer version of combofix. I clicked on No. Then it gave me another window which said, would I like to run combofix in reduced functionality mode. I clicked on No, as well.

Once that was done, I reasoned that if Combofix was still installed on the machine that doing Combofix /u would not yield anything. So I typed that into the run dialog box, and sure enough Windows said that it couldn't find it. However, the C:\qoobox\lastrun folder was still there, so I went ahead and deleted it.

I don't seem to have problems running combofix, it just seems that the problem occurs after it finishes stage_50. That's when combofix tries to do something but can't seem to find a file or program. I can't download combofix right now, but I will later tonight and post an update as soon as possible. Probably around midnight.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the reason I was wondering if combofix was still installed or not was because it didn't give me any feedback on whether the uninstall was successful or not. The c:\qoobox folder is still there along with a few other subfolders, but I did go ahead and delete the lastrun subfolder.

Actually, I found I had a little more time than I thought I did, so I went ahead and worked on combofix. I'm happy to say that it finally ran without stopping after stage_50. Here's the combofix log. I also went ahead and ran mbam, and hijack.

Well that looks pretty good now.

How is the computer running now?

Are there still any signs of an infection?

You should check on your Internet Settings and remove the ProxyOverride setting if you didn't set that on purpose.

Oh, I don't see any problems. I am not getting any weird advertisements or odd behaviour. The original problem with goored seems to be gone. I don't get any redirects when I use google, and when I actually click on the link ... it does actually say something legitimate, and not what it did before, about ad.doubleclicker.net or something.

The ProxyOverride setting. I don't believe I set that myself, so I will go ahead and remove it.

I think maybe this means my system is more or less clean? ;)

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • Check Turn off System Restore.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note 1:

If you are running Windows XP
SP2
, you should upgrade to
SP3
.

Note 2:

Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.

The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
