If speed is important, how many layers of real time protection tools would be too many?

I have an XPS 1530, which has a 2.4 dual core with 3 GB ram. I use XP.

I currently have Avast, Zone alarm, Win patrol, MBAM. I used to also have adaware and spybot's resident tea time, but I took those off. Will those first four all running at the same time cause too much slowdown? I also have many other resident programs running, like phrase express for text expansion, google desktop for indexing and so on. I don't want to slow the system too much by having a multitude of programs constantly scanning every file.

How many tools simultaneously do you use?
