Trojans and Java Exploits Slowing Computer

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've been having problems with my computer speed for weeks now. I have been running Microsoft Essentials, Kapersky 2010, and Malware Bytes scans constantly. Malware Bytes detects no malware, nor does Kapersky, and Essentials has been cleaning what it finds. Mostly it has been finding varations of Java:Exploit 2010.8040 and such.

I ran a scan that I found in another thread, "Trojans creeping in and slowing computer", and it says I have ten vulnerabilities, including a generic virus, two trojans, and various other malware. I need to clean this up once and for all and have my computer run the way it used to. Please help.

Hi,

It's been three days and still no response, so I thought I would bump this.

My computer is worse than ever. The screen constantly maximizes and minimizes quickly. There are sites in my history that I have never gone to and I think I may have a rootkit.

If you could diagnose what I have, that would be great. I would like help rebooting my computer completely- wiping the hard drive.

If I wipe the hard drive, I understand that I lose everything. Would this make my computer totally clean and safe? After I wipe it, I'd like to reinstall antivirus protection and have it run normally. I am very frustrated and worried. Please help.

Hi,

My apologies for the delay.

Yes formatting and reinstalling Windows would make the computer clean and safe; however, lets try a different approach first.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new DDS log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hi,

I ran the scan as requested; however, now I cannot access any program on my computer. Internet Explorer, iTunes, everything cannot be openedbecause it says that the "registry key has been deleted." My anti-virus programs will not open under the same message. I have no idea what happened, especially since I followed all directions for running the ComboFix Scan.

Here is the log produced:

Reboot your computer and that error should go away.

Next, please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  4. Click Start
  5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  6. Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  7. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.

Hi again,

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it. After rebooting the computer, everything is faster, but not as fast as it was before. On the initial reboot of the computer and Internet Explorer, everything was very fast, but then the screen starting minimizing and maximizing quickly like it was before, and things slowed down slightly. Here are the logs, as per request:

I could not figure out how to attach the results of the ESET scan, as it did not make a Notepad document. It founds only one threat, Win32.Tracur.Trojan or something of that sort, and the scan said it was successfully cleaned/quarantined.

My other concern is that back in August, Microsoft Security Essentials found a Backdoor!Cybot trojan that it said was successfully removed. Can I trust that my computer is safe? When my computer was running slower before, the screen would always minimize and then maximize very quickly, in the blink of an eye, which I found strange. Should I be worried about this?

Even in the history for MSE, it used to have the history of everything ever detected, from when I first installed it. When I turned real-time protection back on tonight, it had entries from only September, and when I checked the history just now, only two entries remained. Is this normal? I am running a scan with MSE now, and another Java.Exploit came up and was cleaned.

I'd also like to know which anti-virus programs to keep. I have Kapersky 2010, Microsoft Security Essentials, and MBAM. Which do you recommend?

Hi,

With a detection of a backdoor trojan, I would not trust that computer again without formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Here is what I usually tell people when I see a backdoor; it applies to you as well:

A backdoor severely compromises system integrity.

A compromised system may allow illicit network connections, disabling of security software, modifying critical system files and collection and transmiission of personal identifiable information without your consent.

I recommend that you disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately, and only reconnect to download any tools that are required. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. If it were on my PC I would not hesitate for a moment to do so. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Let me know what you decide.

Thanks for letting us know.

For afterward, I highly recommend the PRO version of MBAM; with it, it's likely that this issue would have been prevented in the first place.

Now that your computer seems to be in proper working order, please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) Download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer. A tutorial on it can be found here.

2) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

3) Make sure your programs are up to date! Older versions may contain security risks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run Secunia's Software Inspector.

4) WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

5) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!

Finally, please also take the time to read Tony Klein's excellent article on: So How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?

Safe surfing,
