Thanks in advance for everything. This support forum is amazing. Previously I was able to just navigate and follow your team's instructions to others users to solve problem. I'm having trouble finding the same post that always helped so I decided to post logs. Please let me know how I can assist. I will be updating after 6 p.m EST to respond to your requests. Thanks !

Please see above Post. I followed instructions from Pinned post "I'm infected - What do I do now?"

1. Defogger never asked me to reboot so I included the Defogger Log

2. DDS posted

3. Attach.txt zipped and attached, Ark.txt from GMER zipped and attached

I am also seeing that some of you advise not to attach but cut and paste so below is ark and attach.txt

UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.

IF REQUESTED, ZIP IT UP & ATTACH IT

Also installed Combofix and microsoft recovery console but upon returned to computer to see a blue screen that indicated windows had to be shutdown due to driver error, etc

Also installed root repeal but could not find proper system file to delete. I remember finding this previously on other computer and fixing problem from here.

Was also unable to do this "If you are not 100% confident in identifying the TDL2 driver then feel free to use Rootrepeal to generate an output log"

IE shuts down constantly and with every program running recommended from here i get some kind of error during scan of iexplorer.exe etc etc

Okay thats all my input for tonight. Please advise and let me know what else you need

Can I please have some assistance or know when someone will be able to look at my issue? Please let me know. Thanks in advance !

I don't see a anti-virus program running. Get a free one.

Only run one Anti-Virus at a time.

Use an AntiVirus Software - Choose only one - More than one will conflict. It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running to protect against viruses. Update Antivirus prior to manual scans as necessary or as used. Please only choose one, having more than one can cause problems, such as crashes and your computer to slow down.

Run a full scan and let us know what it finds along with a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment

Please help. I dont understand. Why are we starting over. I posted logs and exactly how my computer is working. I cant run a Malware bytes scan or install Microsoft Security essentials at all. Please review my posts and let me know what to do next. I dont recall going down this route before. Are you saying install a Anti-virus software and perform a scan with that??

Hi LD,

I was able to download and run AVAST, while it was running it found an infected file and upon deletion advised to run full scan before windows starts. I did that and deleted files as it recommended.

It just finished. Please Advise

Some of the problems that I encountered (not sure if still happening) are that I was unable to run/install Malware Bytes, web sites were redirected and fake virus sites would pop up.

ALSO the System Restore/ System Tools option is still not currently there. Next to System Tools it says >>> Internet explorer (no add ons ) as only option

Vista and Windows 7 users:

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them

2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1

Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.
Note: If you have XP SP3, use the XP SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

RC1.png

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Dragged CFScript first time, Avast antivirus warned me on a few things and kept asking to run in virtual mode, i tried to continue but in end it said not to run combofix in a dangerous way. i realized my anti virus was not disabled. disabled antivirus then ran again. Combofix asked about update, i agreed, then it updated, ran fine and following log was generated. Not sure if dragging CFS script into it worked.

1. MBAM will not run, during SETUP it says access is denied

2. IE runs slow and homepage automatically is http://www.yahoo.com/?fr=fp-yie8

3. Accessories > System Tools> Internet Explorer(no add ons), This is all it gives as options as The system restore option is not there. I do not know if it ever was as i never have used it.

Please do the following to see if it resolves the issue: Post back and let us know please

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

MBAM worked following your instructions. Ran a quick scan. 1 file found and deleted. Please see log below . System restore not available, I dont really care for that but just letting you know. Also every time i start CPU before XP launches a black screen shows quickly with windows options. I think its the safe mode option screen or ability to launch a different windows version. This never showed before , doesnt seem to do anything but letting you know.

That is the Recovery Console that was installed by Combofix.

LD ,

So you think we are good to go?

Do you think the virus/malware is what took the system restore away from system tools or that maybe i never had that option as i never looked at it? i think i figured out how to start it in safe mode now

Also where is my microsoft office ? i have it on disc so no worries but i was just wondering. I dont want to go through another process to find it but just letting you know incase that is indication that something is still active on my system?

Is there anything else you want me to do, any advice to prevent this from happening again on my parents computer. they dont know what they are doing, lol. Will paying for maximum MBAM help them?

Infections like this can cause programs like Office to need to be re-installed.

You can probubly just run the Office setup and select repair or try it through Add/Remove programs.

Good job thumbup.gif

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

For XP:

  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

For Vista / Windows 7

  • Click START Search
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

If you used DeFogger

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.

  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

Here's my usual all clean post

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.

Log looks good :D

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
    5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    13. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week

(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.

I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.

Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

[*]Using a secure browser plugin M86 SecureBrowsing makes it safe to search, surf and socialize online. This free browser plug-in displays security icons next to links on search engines and social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, so you'll know which pages are safe and which ones to avoid.

•Free browser plug-in for Internet Explorer and Firefox

    •Real-time safety ratings

•Ideal for Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn

[*] JAVA Click this link and click on the Free JAVA Download

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site

until there are no more critical updates.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read:

The full version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware could have helped protect your computer against this threat.

We use different ways of protecting your computer(s):

LD,

Uhohh, Under my windows account I have IE and pretty much everything except OFfice

I just went to mom and dads account and its essentially bare. no skype, yahoo messenger or IE , NO desktop shortcuts showing either.

Will this re appear after I uninstalled combofix which i just did?

Also Defogger, I used it i think very first thing we tried but it had trouble. I dont see it on cpu anymore, is there anything I need to do with this to help other stuff appear again?

I think if i can get mom and dads accounts okay then all will be good.

Hi ld , I created new accounts for them and now they have IE. No worries about loss of office, Skype, Yahoo messenger as I can add that.

The only remaining issue is speed and start up time. It takes soooo much longer for windows to load upon startup but the real complaint is the speed of IE upon initial startup. It literally takes minutes to be okay and ready for use and then it runs fine.

Any clue why? If mbam and Cambodia show no infected files does that mean totally clean and it's something else?

Please advise and thanks for all your time and help with this
