Many Issues Regarding my Laptop

Recommended Posts

If someone could lend some expertise about my situation right now, I'd be extremely thankful.

For the last few days, my laptop is unable to load any antivirus websites (it says the page cannot be loaded).

It will not run any antivirus software.

It occasionally will run Spybot but it only seems to find some generic adware. It did find something named Virtumondo or something like that, and was unable to remove it because it said the program was running.

I keep getting Antivirus 2009 pop-ups. I never downloaded anything or purchased it though.

Two links to porn appeared on my desktop. After some fiddling around, we have deleted them and so far, they haven't returned. We also seemed to have gotten rid of prunnet, but I'm not entirely sure it's gone for good.

I have downloaded Malwarebytes onto a thumb drive but it will not run on the laptop. I can post a HijackThis log but it won't be for a while because Spybot is currently running in safe mode.

I tried to rename the file and open it on my laptop but it gave me an error and the program closed. I've attempted twice to open my laptop in its normal mode, but it won't open correctly. The first time, it loaded but when I attempted to open a program it froze. The second time, it loaded to the Welcome screen and froze.

I rebooted into safe mode. Here is my current HijackThis log...

Your issue currently is related to having both McAfee and AVG8 running. You need only one of them. Decide which to keep and uninstall the other.

Please post back a fresh HijackThis log on completion. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay. My Mom has been adding programs and trying different things and I know that changes things on your end. Sorry about that.

Here is my Malware log and HijackThis. We ran a full scan and it came up with four issues. We then ran a quick scan, and it came up with two. Here is the results of the quick scan...

The logs look pretty good actually...there are a few stray registry entries that can go. In addition, I'll make a couple other suggestions for you:

Viewpoint, most often, is foistware. In your case, it may have been bundled along with the AOL software. Of the thousands of users I have assisted on the web, there was only one who complained of a broken internet connection when the Viewpoint service was removed. You can try to remove it as detailed below but if your internet connection fails, just restore that particular entry accessible by clicking the "View the list of backups" button.

Regardless, the Viewpoint Toolbar is not needed and should go...please click start-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down the list and locate the program name. Click Remove and reboot when the uninstall completes. If you decided to remove the ViewPoint Service, you may find something on that in the add/remove programs as well.

Please run HijackThis again and check the box next to these entries that may still exist:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4E50D125-DD60-4854-92F5-4C1F922956B7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\khfDwvWq.dll (file missing)

O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\3.8.0\ViewBarBHO.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Viewpoint\Toolbar Runtime\3.8.0\IEViewBar.dll

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZU

O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtqrrPF - awtqrrPF.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Close all windows now except for the hijackthis application's window, then click the Fix Checked button.

Locate and delete the following folder indicated in Bold text:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

And lastly, the Java is out of date and exploited so let's remove it:

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components:

  • Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web browser.
  • Click Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.
  • Click once on any item having Java Runtime Environment in it's name then click the "Remove" button.

Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read each entry in the list.

Repeat the third step above as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.

***NOTE***

If you are asked to reboot at any point during the uninstallations, please do so. Then go back to Add/Remove and continue with the rest of the removals...when finished uninstalling all of them, reboot the computer.

  • Navigate to and delete: C:\Program Files\Java<--the Java folder indicated in Bold Red Text (if found)
  • Then go to this page. Scroll down to the first download link, "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11" and click the "Download" button to the right. Select the platform for "Windows".
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment # License Agreement", then click Continue...The page will refresh

Then, click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation. Save it to your desktop.

Now, from your desktop, double-click on the executable to install the newest version.

Please post back a fresh HijackThis log and advise how the system behaves for you now. Thanks!

Okay. We removed all the Viewpoint and loaded the new Java. So far, I haven't encountered any of the virus issues. We might run the Malwarebytes scan again to see if anything comes up, if you agree. The only system issue we've encountered is that AOL will no longer open. It gets to the 3rd step, checking the password, then it freezes. We can connect to the internet from IE though. Should we attempt to bring Viewpoint back to get AOL to load correctly again?

Thanks so much for your help so far.
