I've recently acquired some sort of virus on my laptop, on which my OS is Windows XP. Initially it revealed itself when my online banking account locked up, and the bank informed me I had a virus. Before attempting to log in again I ran a Malwarebytes full scan, which turned up 7 infected items. I was able to 'successfully' remove them, restart my computer. I henceforth tried to run another scan to make sure my laptop was clean, which is when I encountered this new problem.

This virus initially allowed me to open Malwarebytes and start a scan, but the program closed after a couple of seconds. Henceforth when I tried to open mbam again, I got the following prompt: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Reading through other threads, I tried downloading "inherit.exe", dropping mbam.exe onto it and reopening it. It allows me to open Mbam and start a scan, but it closes as before. I've attempted running Rkill.exe to kill the Malware processes - it allegedly kills 1-3 processes each time, (sometimes harmless ones like iTunes or mbamgui.exe) but the problem with Mbam isn't resolved. I've also tried running TDSSkiller and Combofix with the same result as Mbam.

Please reply if you are able to advise me.

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

These are links to Anti-virus vendors that offer free LiveCD or Rescue CD files that are used to boot from for repair of unbootable and damaged systems, rescue data, scan the system for virus infections. Burn it as an image to a disk to get a bootable CD. All (except Avira) are in the ISO Image file format. Avira uses an EXE that has built-in CD burning capability.

If you are not sure how to burn an image, please read How to write a CD/DVD image or ISO. If you need a FREE utility to burn the ISO image, download and use ImgBurn.

Let me know how it goes.
