I think I'm infected

Recommended Posts

Hi, please tell me whether my computer is infected. I recently downloaded the full Malwarebytes prgm and have been getting mssgs about blocked IP's. I have scanned my computer with a couple of anti virus programs but the scans don't report anything. When I do a google search of the IP I saw a couple of messages in the forum about the IP. The ip address is: 208.73.210.29. I can post the protection log if need be. I am not the most sophisticated computer user and do not understand the logs and followed the directions as best I could. Please let me know if you need additional informaiton.

Here is the quickscan log from 8/19:

A full scan of my system with Norton 360 only cleaned cookies.

The Defogger disable tool did not behave as the instructions said it would. Although it did not post an error screen it never asked to reboot. Below is the text file posted to my desktop:

Also, I downloaded DDS and saved it to my desktop but it did not open 2 logs only 1. The DDS.txt is copied below:

I ran the GMER Rootkit Scanner. It did not seem to work according to instructions. It did not give a warning about activity or ask to run a full scan. However, I did run a full scan. The ark.txt file is zipped and attached.

The Malwarebytes' log is below:

Previously I ran Hijack this and received a message that "for some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as "hosts" (with quotes), and reboot. For vista: simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose "Run as administrator".

The HijackThis log is below:

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, please visit this webpage for instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new DDS log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hi, thanks for helping me. I loaded ComboFix and did as instructed. However, now I am unable to get onto the internet or utilize the majority of the programs on my system except for Norton 360. When I click on them I receive the message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". I even received this message when trying to access Malwarebytes; and, yes I did disable my antivirus programs before running Combofix. Please tell me what I should do next.

Ok, thank you I did. Does that mean it's clean now?

Also, I checked another household member's laptop with Malwarebytes and it is trying to go to the same site. I had not been notified that it had done so previously but now that I've loaded MBAM the protection logs are blocking the same IP address. Can I just follow the same steps as before; or, should I go ahead and print the logs and have you walk me through the steps again?

Also, I wondered whether the virus could have attacked my wireless router and so after doing some reading on the web I reset the firmware and noticed that the problem stopped for, it seems, about a day but has started again (on the 2nd laptop not the 1st). My wireless router uses WPA2-PSK security. Do I need to be concerned about my entire network? I am asking because I try to really be careful about downloading strange software; and, still cannot figure out where this came from. I have one more computer on the network that is hardly ever used. I will check it today for problems.

Lastly and this may seem silly but I think I better ask. I live in a neighborhood full of software engineers and network administrators. At any given time my wireless card can see 20 or more wireless networks. Do you think I need to strengthen my security? If so, other than using the MBAM software can you recommend other steps. Sorry for all the questions but I'm concerned that this has happened and would like to avoid a re-occurrence, if possible. Once again, thank you much for your help!

An additional question, the first computer stopped trying to get to the ip addresses for about 2 days after it was used again but now the problem is back. Do you have any information on what caused the problem. At this point, I am wondering whether I need to clean every computer in the house and change the wireless router also. Additionally, so that you are aware I use vonage and so my wireless router is attached to the modem via the vonage apparatus. Please, your recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

Hmm.

1. Very important: First disconnect your computers from the Internet.

2. Router Reset: Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into the small hole labeled Reset located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 30 seconds).

3. Reset the IP/DNS settings of your Internet connection on each computer connected:

  • Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Double click on Network Connections.
  • Right click on your default connection (usually Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection) and select Properties.
  • Select the General tab.
  • Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
    • Under General tab:
      • Select "Obtain an IP address automatically".
      • Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

[*]Click OK twice to save the settings.

[*]Reboot if you had to change any setting.

4. Flush the DNS cache:

  • Click the Start logo in the bottom left corner of the screen
  • Click on Run
  • In the command window copy/paste the following:
    ipconfig /flushdns

  • Then hit enter.
  • Exit the command window.

5. Reconnect: Once you have followed all the above steps you can reconnect your computer to the internet.
