removing Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A

Recommended Posts

I was able to remove Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A on a machine with Windows XP by doing the following steps:

1) Downloaded and ran the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). Before running MSE, I disconnected from the Internet and disabled all Symantec Endpoint Protection services running on the machine. MSE detected the trojan as a rootkit on the Master Boot Record (MBR) and quarantined it. It also found and removed associated infected files and registry entries. But it said I needed to reboot to remove the rootkit/MBR. I did so, but it still showed the trojan as quarantined.

2) Following advice elsewhere on the Web, I downloaded the latest version of TDSS killer on another machine, copied it to a flashdrive and then ran it on the infected machine. It said to reboot and once I did that, I ran MSE again and it reported the system was clean.

Hope this works for others also. Good luck.
