Out of my skill level

Hey Guys first of all thanks for taking the time to check this out. I have been battling with my laptop for two days and its not going well. Antivirus Gaurd 2008 got in to my laptop, i think i have stopped it a bit because it is no longger extorrting the Windows security telling me that i need to download it and that i'm not protected. However something is still up because i cannot run MBAM and it took a fairly long time to install, it was hung up on the finishing part. Also spybot S&D will run in the task bar but i can not get it to launch or do anything with the settings. The only program that can succesful update itself is Avira which caught a few things. My webbroswer is hijacked when i try to go to any security or antivirus site. So i tried to do a restore point and not even that works, i would prefer not to do a factory restore but that what its starting to look like

I tried to install hijackthis to post in my post here, but i can not get that to install either. the flashdrive no longer autoruns, i have been uploading programs from the flash that i dl from my dad laptop, i'm affraid that in my haste to try to solve this with many other programs i have made the problem worst. Im ready to throw my laptop in the river! what can i do :o

Cheers Thanks for your time

Okay good. If the system is not properly booting to allow MBAM or HJT to run and scan, clean then try fixing up the system some using this method. Then after it's done try installing MBAM and HJT again and doing their scans.

Take your time and pay close attention to the settings you choose when running the CD.

Requires access to a working computer with a CD/DVD burner to create a bootable CD.

    Avira AntiVir Rescue System
Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to:

  • repair a damaged system,
  • rescue data,

  • scan the system for virus infections.

Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer.
The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.

Please note the Holidays are here and I may be unavailable for a few days or more.

Please be patient, I've not forgotten you and will resume assistance when I return

Many of the other helpers are also visiting Family and Friends so please be patient.

Close all open browsers and chat programs

Start HJT and do a Scan Only and put a check mark on the following items.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: modzlib - C:\WINDOWS\

O21 - SSODL: ieModule - {0B4DCE3D-DD6F-4B6F-93E9-02A6C09EE96E} - (no file)

O21 - SSODL: InternetConnection - {022C1D97-1BFC-4EF8-9A77-2722FC31DF8C} - (no file)

Then click on Fix checked then quit HJT

Try running this AntiVirus tool while I'm away to see if it can locate anything else that might be hidden.

Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Then run this again

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

[*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

[*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

[*]Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

[*]When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then RESTART the computer and run HJT Scan and save log.

Post back ALL the logs

I might not be able to get back with you on this for a few days, please be patient.

You can reinstall Ad-Aware and it should repair the Uninstall feature so that you can remove it again if you like.

Looks good, the current logs do not indicate any infection. Is there any other sign that the system may be infected?

Please check out the following

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • Check Turn off System Restore.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note 1:

If you are running Windows XP
SP2
, you should upgrade to
SP3
.

Note 2:

Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.

The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
