I or my kids have somehow downloaded file/virus/malware which has deleted my Google Toolbar, replacing it with with a large Bing toolbar and search box. Along with this there has been a great increase in boot-up/start time, and tremedous slowdown in PC performance for just about everything including web browsing and connections.

I believe this has something to do with a file and/or potential malware named "searchtoolbar.dll." According to my son he downloaded a bit torrent music downloader, and thereafter began getting a repeating message from WinPatrol saying that a file called "searchtoolbar.dll" wanted to make changes to the system...and asking for approval or not. He kept selecting NO, and the warning prompt from WinPatrol kept returning again and again. He advised me of the issue, and I used the WinPatrol Plus services to try to identify searchtollbar.dll. WinPatrol's site reported that it was a virus and should be immediately deleted. My son said he tried to install the application he downloaded, but when he got the Winpatrol warning he immediately cancelled the install process, and deleted the file he downloaded. I found no remains of either using normal searches, nor could I locate any file on the system named searchtoolbar.dll.

We never knowing accepted the file making chnages to the system; however, the WinPatrol warning prompting stopped. I ran a complete system scan using MBAM, and nothing was found. I did the same with Spybot - S&D, 'Super-Antimalware,' and a few other tools. None reported finding anything, yet my system's performance has ground to a halt. I have done rootkit scans, and as many other specialized scans as I am aware to do. I have tried to boot using Window's Safe Mode, and then do scans while in that mode; however, it seems that I am blocked from starting in safe mode. While booting system I press F8 as I normally would to enter safe mode, and I am prompted only with optical drives and Disk Array as choices.

My operating system is Windows 7 (updated always). I am using Norton 360 v5 (updated) as my primary security application. Also, I have used the aforementioned applications consistently.

I am inexperienced techie, so not sure what to do now.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.
