The other day I posted about mn not opening after an update. After talking to many people, being told i had an infection etc etc even though every scan I did by anything I could find, found nothing. I decided it was going to be much easier to reinstall xp, which went off without a hitch. Got mb loaded again and it worked great untill.....again it did an update this morning and once again it refuses to run, the error message is saying

"an error has occured, please report this error code to our support team.

MBAM_error_expanding_variables (0,453)

I know I am not infected but am unsure what to do with this error, it was fine this morning, and only started after I did the update it told me to do.

Am running xp media, version 2002, sp 3

IMO that sounds like a VB programming error. When you say your got MB reloaded, did you follow instructions on this site for running mbamclean, reboot, install with AV temporarily disabled ?

maybe you should disregard. Post below yours shows same symptoms, and they did this

yes did all that, except for the clean b/c it was installed from the mb disk after a complete reformatting of windows, so there was nothing to clean since it hadn't been yet installed since the reformat.

Please do the following: (do not install the old one first and update, do a clean install and download the new version only)

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

ok, that loaded differently than the other 13 times I have done this since Monday. it never asked if I wanted the trial or to register, today it did. I will take that as a good sign that something went right this week lol. It seems to be running now just fine.

Someone said to change the exe file so that those vicious programs won't recognize mb and prevent scans and it from opening and such. is this a good idea? I can file the folder that mb is in but cannot find any exe file to change....if this is a good idea would you mind telling me how to go about it and what the exe file should look like. I do see the mb icons (2 of them, one doesn't seem to be in english though) and am just not seeing an exe attached to the end.

Thanks!!
