XP Favorites 'Broken' after infection removal

I'm having trouble figuring out how to repair the FAVORITES in an XP SP3 IE8 computer. The system was infected by a couple of virus. I removed them with Malwarebytes as well as AVast. Everything is clean now. However, the 1 thing that does not work is the FAVORITES that are in Explorer. I even added a new one to see what happens, and that, too, does not work.

When I first open explorer and click favorites, the favorite icons are all proper (the blue 'e'). However, within about 1 second, they all turn to broken links. If you right-click on them and click Properties, all there is is the General tab, nothing else.

I thought this may be an association problem, but I see no way to reassociate them plus since it's only a general tab, it may be something else.

Does anyone have any information on how one would repair this? I've googled the problem and after reviewing dozens of pages, cannot find anything to correct.

(This same thing happens under all users on this machine).

Thank you.
