Could somone take a quick look at these logs?

Recommended Posts

Ok, this pc was formatted only a few days ago, but when browsing to a site that I have never seen popups on before, I got a popup from 'opinion-central.com'. The actual address bar of the popup was (if I rememeber correctly) "about:blank" The popup window itself contained nothing but a white page.

I'm probably just being paranoid, and it was just a regular web popup (I've only seen it once so far, will post back if it comes back), but could somone take a quick look at these logs to check I haven't picked up some adware?

Bugger! It came back. When I closed the other windows I was browsing, the 'about:blank' turned into an address. I ran a HiJackThis scan WHILE the popup was showing, so hopefully that will help.

BTW, since my last log Spybot S&D (I disabled teatimer), and some printer software have been installed. (Dad needed the software on so he could scan somthing for work)

Here is the HJT log:

I'm not happy, as this pc had JUST been formatted a few days ago, and now this. :P

Ok, yet another update: I did some more googling, and while it seems as though certain adware will cause a similar popup to this, I found out that a couple of people on Instructables (A site I was browsing the second time this popup showed up, and may well have had open the first time, as I forgot to check what sites I was on) had the exact same popup show up. It is probably one of Instructables' advertisers breaking their rules and causeing the popups (instructables doesn't allow them, hence why I got suspicious and posted these logs when they showed up in the first place)

Hopefully I won't see the popups anywhere but instructables, if I do I will post back here. (The day I can edit my posts to reduce the number of double/triple/quadrouple posts can't come soon enough :P )

Haha, fair enough then. I'm convinced it's nothing though, as I only got the popup twice yeseterday, and ONLY when browsing instructables. Today I didn't visit the site, and haven't had it pop up. Others on the site reported the exact same issue so it's just one of their advertisers doing it. Although if you get time have a quick look at my most recent log to double check. Thanks.

  • Root Admin

Well the W3C Markup Validation Service finds 16 Errors, 18 warning(s) for opinion-central.com

So it's possible that maybe there is some glitch, or it could be a valid partner advertising from them.

I did visit and did not get any popup but who knows if I keep visiting it.

Your screenshot does not show the full link but it goes to core.insightexpressai.com/adserver/ using a secure connection but the Certificate is out of date or belongs to another site.

Just guessing, but it appears to be a legit popup from them since they do have a virtual directory with ADSEVER in the name.

What version of JAVA do you have installed ?

I'm pretty sure it is a valid ad, seeing as I have only had it appear when visiting Instructables. I think it's just one of their advertizers causing it, as like I said, some others on the site complained of the exact same popup (and the topic they were discussing it in is only a few days old) Instructables will probably find what ad is causing it and fix the issue pretty soon.

I have Java 6 update 11.

If I understand correctly, the opinion-central site itself may be legit, but there is also malware out there that links back to it. It doesn't seem like I've gotten that though, as I haven't seen the popup unless on that site. Thanks for your time though.

Yes your system appears to be clean.

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-VISTA

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon.
  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Uncheck
    All drives

  • Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply".

  • Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon
  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Checkmark All drives
that were selected previously then click "Apply".

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

(Vista users, you must ensure that any program versions downloaded are Vista compatible
BEFORE
installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Enable automatic Windows Update on your system in Control Panel, or at least manually scan each week for updates.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic well and this is a must. I recommend
Comodo Firewall Pro
