Windows XP repair virus

Recommended Posts

My friends desktop was infected with the Windows XP recovery malware or virus. I have followed your instructions in your pinned topic "[/b I'm infected-What do I do know? Please follow these instructions to clean your system"

We are still unable to see any of the programs when clicking on "start" and putting the cursor over Programs. We are not so worried about the "pinned to the Start menu items". I was able to restore a few hidden desktop items through the Control Panel settings but not all. Plus, they look "greyed" out. The background screen is still blue and no Favorites are displayed in IE, they are hidden too.

When I tried to run GMER in Safe Mode with Networking I was unable to resize the screen so that you could actually see and click on the "save". It also took nearly 4 hours vs. 2 hours in "regular" mode where I was able to save the log.

The program would not allow me to choose .txt instead of log so I copy and pasted it into Notepad. For some reason it doesn't have the same information that was visible at the end of the scan though. (So I also copy and pasted it into a word document).

I did not run the unhide.exe file that other people have referred to as I'm not sure if I should at this point--would it hurt to do so? I'm guessing we're still infected but I am at a loss how to proceed. Definitely don't want to run ComboFix without "supervision". ;)

We are using the free edition of Avira AntiVirus and Malwarebytes.

Thank you very much for your help.
