There was nothing so I proceeded to use Hijackthis. I used the help of the automated program hijackthis.de and it seems like all files are clean. I might have been re-infected from system restore but I have just turned it off today. I also downloaded Combofix and am planning to run a scan. I tried SuperAntiSpyware but it didn't run. I tried Spyware Doctor but it didn't run. I downloaded Stopzilla but didn't install it because it is considered rogue. I also downloaded Spyware Search and Destroy but it also came up empty yet I still have the programs. The Hijackthis log is below. I will post my Combofix log soon.

Hello Essential and welcome to Malwarebytes! :welcome:

I am D-FRED-BROWN and I will be helping you. :)

Please print or save this topic: it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

***Note: In order for ComboFix to run properly AVG must be uninstalled. Please go here and follow the instructions to uninstall AVG.

You can reinstall it after the computer is clean.

-------------

I see you have Daemon Tools installed. This program can and will interfere with some of the fixes I ask you to peform. DeFogger will temporarily disable these emulation drivers.

Please download DeFogger to your Desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.

  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your Desktop.
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.
-------------
Please download to your Desktop:
  • TDSSKiller.zip from here and extract it (right click on it => "Extract here").

>>> TDSSKiller: Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application.

  • Click on the Start Scan button and wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue tdsskiller2.png
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue tdsskiller3.png
  • If you are asked to reboot the computer to complete the process, click on the Reboot Now button. A report will be automatically saved at the root of the System drive ((usually C:\) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt" (for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt). Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file will appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

In your next reply, please include the following (you may need to use two posts to get it all in):

  • TDSSKiller_log.txt
how the PC is running now?
-------------
Please download ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Please go here to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
**Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
Also, please let me know if any problems still remain.
-------------
Please download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

-------------

In your next reply, please include:

  • C:\ComboFix.txt
  • TDSSKiller log
  • Security Check checkup.txt

How is your computer running now?

I still believe I have it. I can't be certain because it only occurs sometimes. For your convenience, I added the DDS and Attach files that should have been added (according to the sticky, which I read after my post). I didn't post the ark.txt file because it takes too long to scan on my computer, I'll upload it when you ask for it though!

**** FOR SOME REASON AVG INTERNET SECURITY 2011 DOES NOT UNINSTALL. I DELETED IT FROM THE CONTROL PANEL AND USED THE SPECIAL AVG REMOVER BUT IT STILL DOESNT WORK SO AVG MIGHT BE MESSING UP SCANS ****

It looks alright. ;)

Please do the following:

  • Please download aswMBR.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool. (Vista - Win 7 Rt click to run as Administrator)
  • Click Scan
  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your Desktop, and post that log in your next reply. Do NOT attempt any Fix at this time!
  • This will also create a file on your Desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To->Compressed (zipped) folder. Attach that zipped folder in your next reply as well.

Please include the aswMBR log and the MBR.dat Zip file in your next reply. :)

No problem. :)

I'm not seeing anything particularly suspicious in your logs... Hopefully the next set of scans will give us a better look ;) :

Please do the following:

  • Download GMER from here. Save it to your Desktop. Take note of the filename, as it is a randomly named .exe file.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs while scan is running.
  • Make sure all antivirus and other real-time security programs are disabled. See here for directions.
  • Double-click on the downloaded file to start the program. (If running Vista or Win 7, right click on it and Run as an Administrator)
  • If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.-->Click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan:
    gmer_screen2-1.gif
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)

[*]Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient: this can take some time.[*]When the scan is finished, click Save and type in gmer.txt and save to Desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Note!: These types of scans can produce false positives. Do not take any action until a trained helper has seen the log.

Please include the GMER log in your next reply, and let me know of any issues you're encountering. :)

When I first used GMER, it said insufficient resources and didn't save a log (two days ago). Today, it worked fine and I saved the log. However, I couldn't open any other programs after and it said insufficient resources, but at least the log saved. Don't know if that's important but I thought it might mean something. A simple restart of my computer solved it though.

Weird, I already had Defogger disable my Daemon Tools. I went to delete it from the Control Panel but it wasn't there; I ran Defogger again though. However, I will be leaving this morning and coming back in about 7 or so hours so I can't post the log until then. Wanted you to know so that you don't keep refreshing the page :P

Hey, sorry for the late post. I scanned it and was ready to save a log but it said insufficient resources again. I will be out again tomorrow so I might not be able to post another log until the following day. Sorry for wasting your time, I will try to upload it as soon as possible.

No worries, take all the time you need. :) Also, try the following and post the log (if one is created):

Please download maxhandle.exe by noahdfear to your desktop

  • Double click and run the application
  • An active internet connection is required so that maxhandle.exe may download a tool from SysInternals (every time it is run).
  • Log is saved to c:\maxhandle.txt
  • If Max++ is not found Nothing found! is echoed to the screen - no log is produced.

Please post the results for my review

Let's run another scan with TDSSKiller:

We have some more digging to do :).

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file/s for analysis: You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.

c:\windows\system32\win32k.sys

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy/paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is busy, please go to http://www.virustotal.com,

The program is supposedly created by Microsoft, but seeing as you told me to check it, it might be wrong.

Indeed, the file appears to be clean according to the scans. :)

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop.

Close all open programs and browsers, then double-click RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.

Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.

  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth Code, Files, and Code Hooks
  • UNcheck the rest, then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait until the scanner has finished then go File > Save Report
  • Save the report somewhere you can find it. Click Close
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.
Note: You may get the following warning---just ignore it, click OK and continue. Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?

Are you still encountering redirects or other symptoms? Please let me know ;)
