MBAM will not run

Recommended Posts

Hi,

So I ran malwarebytes and let it update, the program downloaded a new installer. After it installed malwarebytes won't run (no errors), not even in safe mode. I've tried using mbam-clean.exe and reinstalling malwarebytes but that didn't help. I seriously doubt it's a virus stopping it from running, I use sandboxie with avira. Spybot also updates/runs fine with no reports of a virus. My OS is Win7 64 if it matters. Any idea how I can fix this?

TIA

Hello and welcome, absinth:

Sorry you're having trouble running MBAM.

If you are pretty sure your system is clean, it may just be that your Avira and/or Sandboxie are blocking MBAM from running.

Try this:

Set Exclusions for Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in Avira on 64 bit Windows Versions:

  1. Open Avira and click on Local Protection on the left
  2. Click on Guard
  3. Click on Configuration on the upper right
  4. Click the checkbox next to Expert mode on the upper left so that it is checked
  5. Under Guard, click the + next to Scan to expand the list
  6. Click on Exceptions
  7. Under Processes to be omitted by the Guard click the ... button next to the blank white box
  8. In the browse window that opens, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  9. Double-click on mbam.exe then click the Add button
  10. Repeat steps 7-9 for the following files:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe

[*]Click on Apply

[*]Close Avira's window

Set Exclusions for Avira in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and click on the Ignore List tab
  • Click the Add button on the lower left
  • In the small browse window that opens, navigate to C:\Program Files and click once on Avira and click OK
  • Close Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If that is unsuccessful, then the next thing I would try is a clean reinstall of MBAM, making sure to set the Avira exclusions during the install.

Here is how:

MBAM Clean Re-installation Instructions:

NOTE: You need to be logged in as an administrator.

1. Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here.

Note:It will ask to restart your computer; please allow it to do so -- very important!

2. After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus (AV) and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here. (Note: Ignore any promos or ads for other software/products at the mirror sites; and there is no fee to download MBAM Free.)

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email, if you are using the PRO version.

3. Launch MBAM (and set the Protection and Registration, if you are using the PRO version).

4. Go to the UPDATE tab, if not done during installation, and check for updates.

5. Restart the computer again (and, if you are using the PRO version, verify that the MBAM icon is in the system tray).

6. Set up any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQs here, or the instructions posted above.

7. Restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications.

8. Add the program folder(s) for your AV and FW to MBAM's "Ignore List".(Instructions are included above.)

9. Set up your scheduled updates & scheduled scans (this only applies to the PRO version). Scheduler help is available here.

10. Run an MBAM Quick Scan.

Please post back and let us know how it goes,

Hi Daledoc1,

I tried all that but it still won't launch. I also made sure sandboxie isn't running it in a sandbox. It didn't start doing this until after an update/install I ran today. What happened was I started MBAM to scan hours ago, it then downloaded an update and now it won't run. So it seems if a virus was stopping it from running the program should've never launched in the first place before the update. Also besides Avira and spybot I decided to run nod32 and it came up clean. So I'm stumped on what's stopping it from running...

Hmm, well, that's a bummer.

It sounds as if MBAM previously *did* work fine on your system, and that this is a new problem?

Did you try my suggested step-by-step clean uninstall/reinstall instructions, including disabling Avira during the MBAM reinstall?

This usually resolves most performance/conflict issues.

If that doesn't work, then I'm afraid you'll need to please wait for more expert assistance.

In the interim, you might wish to try rolling back to the previous version, until this is sorted out.

Instructions are here.

OTOH, If you think you may be infected, preventing MBAM from running, then it might be best to have one of the malware experts take a look at your system.

First, please print out and follow the instructions here, skipping any steps you cannot complete.

Then, please describe your computer's symptoms as best you can by starting a new thread at the Malware Removal-HJT forum .

One of the authorized, trained experts will then assist you as soon as possible for one-on-one malware detection and removal.

When you post, please be sure to select Track This Topic & choose one of the email options, so that you will be notified when someone responds.

Please be patient and allow 24-48 hours before bumping your thread.

Other Support Options:

--- Alternatively, as a paying customer using MBAM PRO, you may wish instead to start a support ticket by contacting support at: support@malwarebytes.org; or

--- Premium, fee-based support options are available here.

Best regards,

Yep, I've used MBAM for a long time and never had a problem with it until this last update. Thanks for the link to the old version, it works fine now. :)

Well, it's quite odd, but there have been a handful of cases of folks having unique trouble running and/or updating the new build (most folks have been running it just fine).

Please keep an eye out here at the forum for updates about the situation, as I am confident the excellent MBAM folks will get to the bottom of this soon.

I expect that there will be a lot of MBAM staff online here on Monday, catching up on this weekend's threads.

One of the mods/experts might ask for some diagnostic logs from your system (e.g. using the DDS tool) to help to sort this out.

You are, of course, fully protected with v.1.50, so long as you keep your databases updated.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance!
