XP Home Security Malware

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I hope this is in the right place/ my questions haven't been answered already; if they have, please redirect me to the correct place =)

I recently got infected with the "XP Home Security" malware. When I could not run Malwarebytes, I system restored to one week before, which fortunately allowed me to access the internet and update and run MBAM. There were 10 threats found when I ran the quick scan, which I promptly removed. I also then scanned the computer with Symantec, which turned up 3 threats that I again deleted. I have performed full scans on the computer with MBAB and Symantec since then and both have turned up with no threats/infections. I then had problems with my Automatic Updates as I could not set it to automatic or manually download updates from the Microsoft website, but I received help from Microsoft support to restore corrupted parts of the registry. My Automatic Updates now shows up as automatic and my MBAM/Symantec full scans find no threats. Can I take it that my computer is in fact clean? If not, what steps do I need to take? I keep hearing about this ESET online scanner. What does it do and should I use it?

Thanks in advance; your help is much appreciated!

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.

Hey,

This is the log from doing a quick scan on MBAM. I hope it's the right one. However, I ran the DDS three times, and each time my computer completely froze; I had to shut it off with the power button each time. I clicked on the link you gave me, saved it to my desktop and double-clicked it to let it run. Each time the screen showed ~50 # signs before my computer would freeze. I'm using an IBM T42 laptop. Could there be issues with that? Thanks for your help in advance!

Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

I am currently running the scan. I will post it once it finishes. However, when I turned on my computer about half an hour ago, this message from MBAM just popped up: "An error has occurred. Please report this error code to our support team. PROGRAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE(-2146893820, -2146893820, Create SDK) Bad Length." I have MBAM set to remind me when my database is over a day old. Does this have to do with that?

Thanks again in advance!
