I was/am infected with one of the XP Security alert bugs. Pretty sure I killed that as the popups have stopped. Right now MBAM shows no problems when I run a full system scan, but I cannot access internet except in safe mode and cannot open any programs except in safe mode. Every file I try to open just gives me the "Open with what program?" windows prompt. Again, everything seems to run smoothly in safe mode but normal bootup is buggered.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Logs will be closed if you haven't replied within 3 days

Please don't attach the scans / logs for these tools, use "copy/paste".

Lets try and fix the open with issue.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them

2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.

A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.

Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the assistance. I downloaded and ran the exehelper as instructed. When it completed however, a file called exehelperlog.txt popped up right away and nothing was automatically created in the directory where I ran exehelper.com from. So I have attached that log file instead. Hopefully this is the right one?

Please download fixAssocations to your desktop.

Double-click on fixAssociations.com to perform the fix.

Please test to see if your executable programs now work - you may have to reboot first.

Larry,

I ran that fix, rebooted and still have the same problem.

There is something I did discover though, and I do not know if it will help. I have been running these fixes and whatnot from safemode logged in as Admin (that's the only log-in/bootup that allows me to do anything). I have been testing the fixes in regular bootup from my non-admin user profile "Marc" (this is where I was logged in when all the problems started). I tried to run the fix in safe mode logged in as "Marc", and I have the same

"open with" problem and no access to internet. So safemode right now isn't enough to get my standard log-in profile to function.

I don't know if that helps or not, but there it is.

While you're looged in as admin, create a new user and use that new user to log in and let me know what happens.

Well that is a nice change of pace. I created the new account and am now functioning without issue, in regular bootup (on that account at least).

Can I recover my files and whatnot that are on the buggered user account?

I doubt the old user account is still infected but you could run combofix after you'ver moved what you wanted.

Vista and Windows 7 users:

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them

2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1

Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.
Note: If you have XP SP3, use the XP SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi Larry,

Sorry, I have just been really busy and haven't had a chance to try the combofix.

My computer is operating a-ok using the new user account and I have managed to move over some files from the bad user account without issue.

I'll try the combo fix on the bad account tonight.
