Hi, computer seems to be infected with Qword malware (slowing down Internet usage, etc. - Qword appears in Internet Explorer in the upper search box and I can't get rid of it). I have read and followed initial instructions posted in this forum but some were not successful. Here is my malwarebytes log

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.

Many thanks for your help. DDS scan runs but then hangs (and freezes my laptop, forcing me to power down to restart) - does not create any logs but just sits on the black DOS-type screen even after leaving it for 15 min. I ran it again after temporarily disabling my Norton antivirus and Norton firewall but it still did the same thing.

MBAM log is below and I look forward to your next suggestion...thx again.

Hi,

Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

I'm back to having the same problem when I first started the thread - both DDS and Combofix install correctly, begin to scan correctly, but then hang. I let both of them run for hours (made sure Norton auto-protect and firewall were disabled) but they don't move past the message that they are scanning. I also tried to run both in Safe Mode with Networking and the same thing happens (both start up and start scanning but hang, and no logs are produced). Not sure what I could possibly do next to get either of the programs to generate a log for you and so, appreciate your advice.

Hi,

  • Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and extract it into a folder on the infected PC.
  • Execute the file TDSSKiller.exe by double-clicking on it.
  • Wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • When its work is over, the utility prompts for a reboot to complete the disinfection.

By default, the utility outputs runtime log into the system disk root directory (the disk where the operating system is installed, C:\ as a rule).

The log is like UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.

for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt.

Please post that log here.

Thanks. I ran it, it said no infections and did not ask me to reboot (probably b/c there is nothing to disinfect). Here is the log (Qword till showing in the search box in IE).
