I've used Gimp and Camtasia, both are good. Another free photo editor is IrFanview. They also have an Icon maker plugin.

You stated video recording software, did you mean video editing? Or do you want to 'capture' YT vids?

If video editing, alot depends on what video format you are playing with, WMV, mpeg, avi, or the newer HD formats that GoPro puts out for example. For non-HD, down and dirty import & 'Editing' MS MovieMaker can do a nice job if you take your time and use all the tools it has. Yea, its true. It also works very well when making movies from still shots. Lots of features to play with really.

To do any real video editing one needs to spend a few bucks. I have used Vegas and Serious Magic, now owned by Adobe in they CS3, CS5 packages. I have recently found, and am evaluating, Serif's MoviePlus X5. It's about $75 but has many of the tools the high end apps have. Well worth the money especially with the fact it will edit HD MP4 and H.264 codec in real time. On a box with the right HP. As with all video editing, depending on your video exprience there is a learning curve, so don't think you are going to download it and slam out an award winning vid in an hour or two. ;)

The topic title says "Screen Recorder" so I believe that's what he wants. You have a point though, "capturing" YT videos is another story, there are plugins for that which actually download the video without degrading the quality.

for windows you could use hypercam but its not good for games really if there in fullscreen mode well at least hypercam 2 was like that i dont nkow about 3

my only other suggestion would be to fork out the cash for fraps

Hypercam is useless.
