Hi,

I got a message earlier saying a virus had been detected and i selected to move it to the vault. I have started using the computer about an hr later and when I try to open and program it says "choose the program you want to use to open the file" and brings up a dialogue box with a list of programs. The tickbox for "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is greyed out so I cant access it. There is a message at the bottom of the dialogue box about using the web to find the appropriate program, and it is through this link I am able to get to the web to try to find a solution to the problem. If i try to open a web explorer (or any other programs) as normal, it goes through a bunch of explorer windows but never actually opens the program.

My first reaction was to try a system restore, but it brings up the above dialogue box when I select this option. I have had malware bytes on my computer for ages and I have next tried to update, then run that. But when I try to open malware bytes it does the same dialogue box not allowing me to open it.

I am running windows xp. I have twice tried and failed to open safe mode either using F8. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give in fixing this problem using malware bytes as it has been so effective in the past. If any more information is required pls let me know

Nick

One more thing, i downloaded and successfully installed hijack this to try to show some hijack this logs, but when i went to programs to open hijack this it said application not found.

Logs will be closed if you haven't replied within 3 days

Please don't attach the scans / logs for these tools, use "copy/paste".

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clean' post.

Vista / Win7 users:

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)

2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator") every time you run them

1) exeHelper

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.

A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.

Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Let me know if you can open programs now.
