Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

I suggest uninstalling these toolbars; often are they are installed without your consent:

Lexmark Toolbar

ALOT Toolbar

AddThis Toolbar

Google Toolbar

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, please visit this webpage for instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new DDS log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Next, please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  4. Click Start
  5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  6. Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  7. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.

dear chris,

here is the security check info,...as for the Eset scanner file, there were 2 infected items which were quarantined, but i was unable to get to the C:\program file as it said it was not a valid file... i must have done something improperly.is there some other way i can pull it up? i'll reactivate my Avira for now... or, if i run the Eset program again (about an hour and a half) do you think it will give me the option to save?

thanks for your thought processes on figuring out my computer issues...

sincerely,

kateaid

Click Start --> Run, and type this in:

notepad.exe "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"

Press Enter. See if you can see the log now.

Navigate to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /uninstall in the box that appears. Click OK afterward. Notice the space between the X and the /uninstall

This uninstalls all of ComboFix's components.

Delete SecurityCheck.

After that, navigate to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall the following program (if present):

Java

dear chris,

ok, so just to show i don't have a strong grip on reality, there now seem to be two logs for your perusal, the first one being from today... i reran it in the hope i would be able to locate the log, which i wasn't able to do, even with the provided entry...but hey party bonus.

i will attempt to follow up on the remainder of your instructions a bit later this evening and hope it all goes well....i know when i try to open some programs thru my log on (this one is my husband's) i am asked how i would like to open it...haven't looked into that too far yet, don't know if there is something amiss, or just me not figuring something out...

thank you for your help in all of this, i can see improvement in the antivirus craziness, will keep an eye out for anything else that looks weird...

i'm grateful for compute(very)friendly folks like you...

hi chris,

uninstalled the reader, flash player, and java, but only java would let me reinstall the current version, even with my avira deactivated - always get an operating system error message...

on my log on, i still cannot get into any of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe programs (is that what the raktor whammie was for?), saying the application is not found. when i try to open up other things like windows media player or photoshop, for example, it wants to know what i'd like open it with and then won't do it.

although,i can still read two of my external site emails even after i get a message saying i need the flash player to read it...

any thoughts? i think you must be pretty close to nailing this thing down. maybe some of these other things are set up things that i may be goofing up, but not really sure...even the Avira program does not seem to functioning the same way on my log in/site as it does on the other one...???

ever onward...

thanks again...

hi chris,

yes, i saw your instructions earlier and ran the raktor app.two different times, without effect. i ran it again tonight, and the .exe files are running happily, but the reader and flashplayer downloads are still uncooperative... so, we're getting there..

thanks,

kateaid

What do you mean uncooperative? Download fresh copies of the installers.

hi chris,

i was finally able to download flashplayer successfully from within a site that required it rather directly from the adobe download site...i still get an operating error message when i try to download the reader from there...but this seems to be the only thing i'm having any problems with right now, ...so is that pretty much everything?...we're fixed?! wow. this is awesome....so, do you suggest i run full scans for malware and antivir maybe once a week? is there anything else i need to watch for?

thank you so much for all your help. having a forum available like this is such a valuable resource for so many people!

sincerely,

kateaid

Hi,

Could you post a screenshot of the error that Adobe Reader is giving you?

Here is my standard prevention speech:

I highly recommend the PRO version of MBAM; with it, it's likely that this issue would have been prevented in the first place.

Now that your computer seems to be in proper working order, please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) Download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer. A tutorial on it can be found here.

2) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

3) Make sure your programs are up to date! Older versions may contain security risks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run Secunia's Software Inspector.

4) WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

5) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!

Finally, please also take the time to read Tony Klein's excellent article on: So How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?

Safe surfing,

hey chris,

spent a little more time looking at a few different adobe download sites for reader and was finally sucessful at having it run all the way through. woo hoo. soo, i think that's all she wrote...definately going to look into your recommendations to keep the bad guys out of dodge. as pleasant of an experience as it has been to work with y'all, i really would rather not have to go through this, or a similar situation again anytime soon! (but will know where to go if i should ever need to!)

thanks again for all your help - i will try and learn something from your knowledge & experience...

sincerely,

kateaid
