Most colors and images won't show up on IE or Mozilla

hi everyone. my mom did something while on her laptop [sony vaio; running XP home edition version 2002 service pack 3] that i can't figure out,,. was messing around on IE and suddenly, many websites on both IE and Mozilla Firefox will not display colors or images. For example, the light blue stripes on Gmail [denoting different emails] loads as just black and white. i dont even know where to start with this, except going to an old system restore point from before she 'thinks' this happened. suggestions more than welcome.
