Today my wife's pc was acting weirdly, there was a pop up stating that the pc was at risk and did she want launch antivirus which she did. After that there was little she could do and asked me to look at it. I performed a system restore to 5/11 which gave me some control, but the real time McAfee would not stay enabled for longer than 1 or 2 seconds. After consulting with McAfee the real time asspect was fixed, and the tech performed an quick scan which found no infections. When there are issues such as these I never fully trust the first explanation so I installed MB and found "trojan.fakealertrp.gen" after a full scan. I have notified McAfee that their engine missed this infection. Subsequently I searched the internet for this trojan and found your sitre seemed to be the only "well known tool" that identified this trojan. I encourage you to report this to CERT

Thanks,

Pete Pfeiffer

Thanks for the kind words, they are appreciated :).

We do generally share samples with other vendors upon request, and each company often uses different name classifications for various infections. Given that the infection detected used the name .gen, that usually means that we detected it heuristically, something that Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is generally pretty good at, which is one of the reasons it generally does well against many of the latest threats.
