Hi There,

I've tried running Malwarebytes several times from save-mode administrator, the first time I got 7 hits and deleted them, but when I returned to normal mode still got a message that my computer may not be protected (McAfee) and when clicked on the "fix" link got a message "Hardware Installation Antivirus has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with windows XP" this told me to cancel the installation which I did. Then I downloaded the more current malwarebytes and it found 3 more trojans, but I could not run the system in normal mode as it would tell me that I had to select a program to run it. I followed the instructions under "I'm Infected - What now" and downloaded the antivirus, but still no luck. Help please as I really would prefer not to do a hard reboot.

Thanks,

Angela

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.

Hi,

I see the Ask Toolbar in your log.

I strongly recommend you remove Ask Toolbar from your computer because:

  • It promotes its toolbars on sites targeted at kids.
  • It promotes its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites.
  • It promotes its toolbars through other companies' spyware.
  • It is Installed without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent from the user whatsoever.
  • It Solicits installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.
  • It makes confusing changes to user's browsers -- increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit.

You can read more about Ask.com here

To remove it:

Click Start-->Control Panel-->Programs and Features

Click on the program name AskBarDis to highlight it

From the menu at the top, select Uninstall or Remove.

I also recommend uninstalling Zynga.

Please reboot the computer.

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program (AVG and McAfee). This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

After that, run DDS again and post its log.

I didn't find a file named AskBarDis on my computer but I did find one called AskSBar which I removed along with Zynga and a bunch of other stuff. Here is the new DDS file. Also, while going through my computer I found several files called UsrClass (some where UsrClass.dat) which I have no idea what it is but every time I tried to delete it I got a message stating that it was being used by another program and couldn't be deleted. Don't know if this has anything to do with the issues on the computer but figured I'd ask.

Thanks again for all your time and help!

Angela

Hi,

Also, while going through my computer I found several files called UsrClass (some where UsrClass.dat) which I have no idea what it is but every time I tried to delete it I got a message stating that it was being used by another program and couldn't be deleted. Don't know if this has anything to do with the issues on the computer but figured I'd ask.
Where are you finding these files?

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, please visit this webpage for instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new DDS log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hi,

Where are you finding these files?

Found them when I first tried to run malewarebytes from the regular desktop mode, would start running then stop at that file giving me an error message and shutting down malewarebytes. I then ran the program from safe mode (this was back in February) and it cleared everything out. On a hunch I decided to look for that one again when I was looking for the Ask Bar and found it when I did a search of the C drive using the name. Didn't really look where they are specifically. Did you want me to check?

I'll run the other program and post shortly.

Hi,

Can you run an MBAM scan in Normal Mode now?

Next, please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  4. Click Start
  5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  6. Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  7. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.

Still unable to run MBAM in normal mode, tried using both desk-top short cut and directly from start menu, both times get a message asking what program do I want to run it from. Also tried running from safe mode user Anthony Wyman, and received the same message, only able to run it from safe mode administrator. Here is the log from today's mbam run.

Still no luck running anything in normal mode. Keep getting messages to choose what program to run files that should run on their own. At this point, I would like to know if there is anyway to safely download some of my digital photos and word/excel files onto a flash drive or memory card without transfering any of the problems, that way I could just wipe the computer and start over.
