Hello In my sys. tray the security center icon is showing. When you click on it , it tells you that automatic updates is turned off. When you click on the button to turn it on this message appears.

We're sorry. The security center could change your automatic updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to system in control panel. on the automatic updates tab, select automatic (reccomended), then click ok.

When I do this the automatic choice is already checked. Whats going on. my System is running Win Xp pro 32 bit with I think all the updates??? I need help!!! I was sent here from the Malwarebytes and hijackthis forum. They said there was no malware present. Larry

Greetings :)

Please do the following:

Step 1:

Run the Windows Update Reset Tool:

  • Please download the Windows Update Reset Tool from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the MicrosoftFixit50202 to begin
  • Follow the onscreen instructions and run it in Agressive Mode
  • Reboot your computer if asked to do so
  • Let me know in your next reply if the issue is corrected

If that did not correct the problem, then please do the following:

Step 2:

Create a List of Running Services:

  • Please copy and paste the following text exactly as written into notepad (not wordpad or any other text editor):
    @echo off
    net start>"%userprofile%\desktop\services.txt"
    sc query type= service>>"%userprofile%\desktop\services.txt"
    "%userprofile%\desktop\services.txt"
    del /f /q "%userprofile%\desktop\services.txt"
    del /f /q %0

Once you've done that click on File and select Save As...

  • In the Save dialogue box click on the drop down menu next to Save as type and select All Files
  • Name the file Services.bat (the .bat extension is very important)
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click it to run it.
  • Once it finishes it will open the file it created in notepad, please copy and paste the file's contents into your next reply.

Create an Autoruns Log:

  • Please download Sysinternals Autoruns from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Note: If using Windows Vista or Windows 7 then you also need to do the following:
      1. Right-click on Autoruns.exe and select Properties
      2. Click on the Compatibility tab
      3. Under Privilege Level check the box next to Run this program as an administrator
      4. Click on Apply then click OK

    [*]Double-click Autoruns.exe to run it.

[*]Once it starts, please press the Esc key on your keyboard.

[*]Now that scanning is stopped, click on the Options button at the top of the program and select Verify Code Signatures so that it is now checked

[*]Click on the Options button again and this time uncheck Hide Windows Entries

[*]Once that's done press the F5 key on your keyboard, this will start the scan again, this time let it finish.

[*]When it's finished and says Ready. on the lower left of the program window, please click on the File button at the top of the program and select Save and save the Autoruns.arn file to your desktop and close Autoruns.

[*]Right click on the Autoruns.arn file on your desktop and hover your mouse over Send To and select Compressed (zipped) Folder

[*]Attach the Autoruns.zip folder you just created to your next reply

Thanks :)
