Hi, I am new here to the forum. I am running a desktop Windows 7 64bit and a few days ago I clicked on a link and found myself infected with Malware Protection (Designed to Protect) known under defender.exe It all buy hijacked my system. I had to log out and while my computer was shutting down it said that Windows was installing 1 of 21 updates and to not disrupt it. I got suspicious and shut down from the button on my tower. When I logged back in I noticed my Microsoft Office wasn't displaying properly my word documents. I reinstalled Microsoft Office and it fixed the problem. Frantic at first, I ran two programs Malawarebytes and also Hitman Pro 3.5. Hitman got it (defender.exe trojan) first and Quarantined it. I left Malawarebytes finish and it found nothing suspect.

Here now is my problem...I thought everything was fine and then today after a few days the taskbar at the lower right of my screen launches up a window telling me that my Webroot Antivirus with Spysweeper is not running and to click the suspect window it displayed to start the Webroot program. The logo for Malware Protection was on the box that popped up! My computer was getting really, really slow to respond and browsing with firefox was excruciatingly slow.

However, when I checked my Webroot was in fact already open in the taskbar. So, I click on the 'Customize' tab for the taskbar and it brings up all my programs. The icon column on the left and the action column on the right. I scrolled down the list and sure enough defender.exe with Malware Protection written below it is on the list. But it's grayed out, there is also no option to remove it. I want to remove it so not to be reminded of this horrible ordeal. I went back into Hitman Pro and changed it from Quarantine to Delete and removed it. But it's still showing up on the list for taskbar.

I did a search for all the paths associated with this Malware Protection and my computer can't find any of the paths said to be linked to it. Perhaps HitmanPro removed them?

But something is still on my system is it not? Somehow I just get this feeling something is still not right. Any clue as to how to remedy the problem, if in fact something is still lurking??

Thank you for your time and consideration regarding this issue,

Richard
