I have removed the virus and used the unhide program to bring back my files and icons. The only remaining problem is under programs in the start menu. The programs are there but there are no subfolders, everything says "empty." Can someone please help me to bring those back? How do i put back in all the shortcuts? Thank you in advance for the help.

Hi,

Maybe you're still infected.

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.

Downloaded unhide.exe again. Ran it again. Restarted computer and nothing has changed. All my programs are listed under the start menu but all the subfolders still say empty. For example, Start-all programs-microsoft office-empty.

Hi,

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program (AVG and Lavasoft). This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

Restart your computer. Disable the other antivirus and grab a fresh copy of unhide.exe; try it now.

  • Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and extract it into a folder on the infected PC.
  • Execute the file TDSSKiller.exe by double-clicking on it.
  • Wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • When its work is over, the utility prompts for a reboot to complete the disinfection.

By default, the utility outputs runtime log into the system disk root directory (the disk where the operating system is installed, C:\ as a rule).

The log is like UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.

for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt.

Please post that log here.

I ran it in safe mode. No change. The programs on the start menu still dont have subfolders.

Now i have another problem. Just returned back from vacation and now i can't even get my computer to get to the desktop screen. It starts up then shows the microsoft xp screen and either gets stuck there or it automatically restarts itself and starts the whole process over.

no, when i select to boot back into safe mode with networking (or anything else for that matter) the computer reboots to the same screen telling me that windows did not load properly and asks me again how i wish to start, e.g. safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, etc.

I've also tried regular safe mode, normal mode, and tried to use the last known good configuration to reboot, none of which worked.

Hi,

Do you have your Windows CD?

These are links to Anti-virus vendors that offer free LiveCD or Rescue CD files that are used to boot from for repair of unbootable and damaged systems, rescue data, scan the system for virus infections. Burn it as an image to a disk to get a bootable CD. All (except Avira) are in the ISO Image file format. Avira uses an EXE that has built-in CD burning capability.

If you are not sure how to burn an image, please read How to write a CD/DVD image or ISO. If you need a FREE utility to burn the ISO image, download and use ImgBurn.

Let me know how it goes.

i used avira and made the rescue disk. Followed it step by step, rebooted when it told me to after scanning and it still wont boot. It gets to the microsoft xp screen with the scrolling bar at the bottom and it just keeps scrolling indefinitely. :(
