Hello,

My computer became infected a while back with some sort of virus that pretends to be a Windows Security Alert. It starts running a fake scan and won't let me run Malewarebytes except in safe mode under my Admin account. If I try to run your program in normal mode, I receive a message saying, "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." Is there any way around this? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

Log in into your infected useraccount where Malwarebytes won't run.. This is important!

There, navigate to the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-malware folder and locate the file mbam.exe in there. Rename that one to mbam.com

It's important this one has a .com extension.

Make sure you have file extensions shown, this to prevent you rename it to mbam.com.exe instead. See here how to show extensions:

http://www.fileinfo.com/help/windows-show-extensions.html (XP)

http://askabouttech.com/how-to-show-file-extension-in-windows-7/ (Vista/Win7)

Once you've renamed mbam.exe to mbam.com properly, launch mbam.com (doubleclick it to launch).

This should allow Malwarebytes to run. Please look first if there are updates, so click the update tab and download the updates.

Then perform a quick scan and let Malwarebytes remove what it found.

Reboot afterwards and post the malwarebytes log in your next reply.
