XP Security Center Malware

Recommended Posts

Hi!

My computer became infected with a nasty virus that is masquerading as "XP Home Security". Main symptoms: Constant security warning pop ups claiming to find infections and exhorting me to purchase a antispyware program, browser hijacks (It actually blocked me from going to ANY site but I finally managed to get firefox to bypass the problem by using HijackThis Analyze this feature that connected me to the internet), and the worse symptom of all it will not let me run/install Malwarebytes (it would not run so I uninstalled it and then tried reinstalling but will not work). Below is a Hijackthis log. I have been to other forums for help before so I am somewhat familiar with what will be required of me but really I am still a newbie. Please help! Thank you for your time.

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please rename mbam.exe to explorer.exe and see if it will update and run.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.

Thanks for the reply and the help! I cannot get MBAM to run still (I foolishly uninstalled it when I first discovered it would not run and tried to reinstall to no effect. Clearly I underestimated this malware). I tried renaming the install program as you suggested (I did this when prompted by Firefox for the download location). This did not work. Below is the DDS text.

Update: I spied another forum post which sent me to a bleeping computer page that gave me directions as to how to get Malwarebytes working again. I followed the instructions and downloaded the appropriate program and I was able to to scan again with Malwarebytes. I ran a full scan and removed the selected items. Things are better (No more pop ups so far, I can open malwarebytes, firefox is no longer blocked and redirecting so far). However, there is still a security alert icon in the lower corner near the clock. I am going to run another scan. What should I do now? Here is the log from the first scan:

Sorry I keep posting again. I wanted to be more clear. The icon I believe actually is the legitimate windows security panel. Unlike previously, it does not exhort me to buy anti-spyware and it tells me my firewall and virus protection are on (unlike previously). However it says automatic windows security updates are off even though in the systems panel it says it is on. I cannot get it to accept this change. Furthermore below is the log from MBAM after I removed the items. Subsequent scans (both quick and normal) have not picked up anything. Thank you for your time. I apologize for posting replies (I hope its not confusing). Just want you to get the most accurate information.

  • Staff

Hi,

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, please visit this webpage for instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new DDS log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Next, please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  4. Click Start
  5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  6. Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  7. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.

Chris - Thank you so much for the help. Below are the logs you requested. My computers seems to be running fine. The only outstanding problems are 1)My screensaver/monitor power save modes no longer activate (Tho I think those may be long standing unrelated issues) and 2) When I turned my anti-virus back on it said there was a conflict with another program but it then seemed to boot normally. Frankly, given that it let in this nasty virus and then proceeded to do nothing to fix it, I think I am going to uninstall it and purchase the full version of Malwarebytes.

Hi,

There is some more to do here.

Navigate to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /uninstall in the box that appears. Click OK afterward. Notice the space between the X and the /uninstall

This uninstalls all of ComboFix's components.

Delete SecurityCheck.

After that, navigate to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall the following programs (if present):

I did switch to another browser and downloaded them successfully. I have not had any issues since removing the virus with MBAM and following your instructions (Other than the screen saver not working and Mozilla also not working properly). Thank you for the help! Am I entirely clean then? Any other precautions I should take?

Hi,

Yes it does look like you're clean. If you would like assistance with these residual issues, I recommend posting in our PC Help forum and someone may be better able to troubleshoot them with you.

Now that your computer seems to be in proper working order, please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) Download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer. A tutorial on it can be found here.

2) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

3) Make sure your programs are up to date! Older versions may contain security risks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run Secunia's Software Inspector.

4) WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

5) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!

Finally, please also take the time to read Tony Klein's excellent article on: So How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?

Safe surfing,

-screen317
