MBAM Scan Causing Computer to Freeze

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Hope you can help. Recently, when running a scan, the laptop freezes after a couple of minutes at the same point every time. It's always at this file :-

C:\Windows\System32\NlsLexicons****.dll where the asterisks are a 4 digit number which varies each time.

I've tried running in safe mode and the same thing happens. The laptop is running Windows Vista. I thought at one point it may have been malware causing it, but after posting this issue at Tech Support Forum they have ruled this out and suggested I come here.

The AV on the machine is Avira and that scan runs clean. However, I've also tried running the ESET online scan, with Avira disabled, and it always freezes at the following file :-

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Football Manager 2009\directx\dsetup32.dll.

Apparently this happens sometimes, although it's never happened before, so hopefully if we get the MBAM issue sorted, this will be okay too.

I have run MBAM (free version) often on the machine with no issue.

Thanks for any help.

Hello MemphisFlash,

Please click on the Start button, then type in the search: Device Manager (Ensure that Device Manager is high-lighted)

Then click Enter. (UAC should prompt and ask for permission, click continue)

Within Device Manager click the + next to Disk Drives

What are the makes and models of the Hard Drives you have installed?

Thank you very much!

Hello MemphisFlash,

Here is an ISO file located: HERE

You will need to be able to burn this to a disk. Here is a tutorial on how to write an ISO: HERE

After you create the CD restart your system with the CD inside your system. Ensure that your system will boot from the disk drive so that the new item you created will be the first to boot.

Please follow the on-screen prompts.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask here.

Thank you!

Hello MemphisFlash,

Sure!

An ISO is an archive file (also known as a disc image) of an optical disc, composed of the data contents of every written sector of an optical disc, including the optical disc file system. To then burn the information to a disc you will need a CD burner and software that will do this for you. (The link I gave you has specific step-by-step instructions on how to burn the ISO to a disc)

As for your data on the system it will be left untouched.

The reason for the disc, is at system start-up (when you turn on the power) you can choose to boot from your Hard drive (which is where your Windows Operating System is stored) or from a removable location (such as your disk drive).

The disc you will be creating will run an application that will test your hard drive to see if there are any issues with it. The numbers I had you look up are important as well as within the test it should reference that device.

During system boot before your Windows Operating system starts there is a function key you will need to strike to change the boot preference of your system. (The information here is for a Toshiba Computer: HERE)

When you have the test running you will need to select the device then click Advanced Test.

If you have any questions on this (as it is a lot of computer jargon) please let me know and I will gladly work with you more closely.

Thank you!

Hi Mainard,

Being the trusting soul that I am I decided just to download this ISO. Now I'm lost (don't laugh). When I click on the icon it starts a Roxio Creator De.

Option 1 says; Choose the location for the image, so I select F:\dft32_v416_b00.iso.

Option 2 says; Insert a blank disc in the drive below HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT10N. This doesn't exist so I simply copied the ISO named in step 1 above.

Option 3 says; Click the Burn Image button when you are ready to continue. However, when I do this I get a message saying; The HL-DT-ST DVD+- RW GT10N drive is in use by ***** (where ***** is another user on the laptop). Please wait until that project is completed, and try again.

However that user isn't even logged on.

Help :-)

OK, minor setback.

You may need to re-install Roxio as there may have been a problem during installation.

You can also try IMGBurn

ImgBurn Installation

  1. Download ImgBurn from the above link and save it to a location on your hard drive you will be able to locate later.
  2. Once the file is finished downloading, double-click on the downloaded file to start the setup.
  3. Press Next at each of the prompts. During installation it will ask if you want the program to check for updates whenever it runs. If this is something you want it to do, press Yes.
  4. When it is done press the Finish button and ImgBurn will now start.

Writing the Image

  1. Put a blank CD or DVD into the device you wish to write with.
  2. If ImgBurn is not already started, double-click the ImgBurn icon that looks like the following:
  3. When the program opens, select the CD/DVD Recording device that you would like to write to from the Destination drop down box.
  4. Click on the File menu and then choose the Browse option.
  5. Navigate to the image that you would like to write and click on it once to highlight it. Then press the Open button.
  6. When you are satisfied with your settings, click on the image that looks like this:
  7. If you get an error stating that ImgBurn is unable to Lock the volume for exclusive access, then click on the Tools menu and select the Settings option. Then click on the Write tab and remove the checkmark next to the checkbox labeled Lock Volume - Exclusive Access. Now proceed to step 6 again.
  8. When the program is finished writing the image to your DVD or CD, it will display a message box stating it is finished. Simply click on the OK button.
  9. Close the program if you are finished with it.
  10. Eject your CD your DVD.

You are now done writing the image file with ImgBurn.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you very much for your diligence and patience!

Hi Mainard,

Sorry, I had to head off last night. Those instructions look straightforward, even to me, so I'll uninstall Roxio and use the IMGBurn.

Unfortunately I can't get the laptop tonight so I'll try again tomorrow night, if that's okay. Thanks very much for all your help so far, and I'll back in touch as soon as I can.

Cheers.

Rob.

Hi Mainard,

Thanks for bearing with me. I've followed your instructions for IMGBurn and I've now got the ISO that I downloaded previously on to the disc. At least I think I have. When I look at the CD Drive in Computer, it still gives me an option to burn to disc. And when I look at the CD it doesn't look as though anything has been burned to it.

Should I take this option to burn to disc, or do you think it's already happened?

Cheers.

Rob.

Hello Memphis,

IS the CD a CDRW? (Compact Disc-ReWritable) is a rewritable optical disc. Which can be overwritten, which may be why you are seeing the burn option.

While the CD is in your system, within My Computer does it have data on the disc or is it empty? If it is empty then burning did not succeed. If it has data on it, then you have it burned.

Then you will need to keep the CD in your system and modify the boot sequence of your computer. (typically your system will boot from the Hard drive because that is where your OS is installed) For the CD to boot first you will have to modify the sequence so that Boot from CD will be the first option your system will perform.

Again, if you have any questions please feel free to respond here and I will assist you with it.

Thank you very much! :)

Hi Mainard,

The CD is recordable (it says CD-R on the package) and is one of a number I've used for copying CD's before, but I don't think it's ReWritable. Once it's written, it stays. Hope that isn't a problem.

My Computer shows the ISO on it (it's actually 4 folders and 2 MS-DOS applications). I took the option to burn and it says there are no files to burn, so I think it's okay.

Should I go ahead and try the reboot from the disc anyway?

Cheers.

Rob.

Right, here's the actions :-

From the F12 boot options at restart :-

Boot from CD Drive

SCSI and ATA Support

For Adaptec

the it does it's thing

I agree to the License Agreement

Detect Devices

It's then I get the Device List Empty message and it asks me if the device list is correct.

Should I be taking different options?

Apologies for my ignorance.

Cheers.

Hello MemphisFlash,

Evidently DFT was not able to detect your HDD (hard disk drive).

Did you order your Laptop from Toshiba? What is the model # of it?

HERE is another different ISO download that you can burn onto a different CD. Sorry for the first test, this one should be comprehensive enough to detect your HDD.

Thank you very much!

Hi Mainard,

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron which seems to have a Toshiba Hard Drive. I downloaded the latest ISO file but when I use IMGBurn to put it on to disc, all I get is a readme text doc.

I then reboot the laptop from the CD and it gives me an Invalid Opcode message each time. I've tried it 3 times now with the same result, using a different CD every time. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what. The file I've downloaded is definitely an ISO file and the readme just says to boot the machine from it.

Sorry for being such a nuisance but I'm strictly an amateur when it comes to pc's. I have to head off now but I'll be back with it tomorrow if you can bear with me.

Thanks again.

Rob.

Hello Memphis,

You are not bother at all! Please be sure to use a blank CD when burning the ISO onto it.

The ISO I sent should be labeled SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO Please ensure that is the file you are locating when burning using ImgBurn.

I look forward and am eager to assist you further :) have a great day!

Hi Mainard,

Back again. I've had a look at the CD in My Computer and this time it's showing all the different files and folders, instead of just a readme doc. I've no idea what went wrong with the previous discs, probably me :-)

I'm now in the process of rebooting again. From the initial F12 button I get the following boot options :-

Internal HDD

CD Drive

Onboard NIC

BIOS Setup

Diagnostics

Every time I select the CD Drive I get the following message :-

Invalid Opcode at 000B 0000 0402 086F 025D 0702 0702 0A83 0CEE 2132 0000 0000 0000

This is the same result I got every time I tried last night. Any ideas?

Thanks again.

Rob.

Hello Memphis,

Let's try the windows error checking. CHKDSK will run, it will take a while please bear with the time.

  1. Please Open My computer
  2. Right click on Local Disk (C:)
  3. In (C:) Properties Click the Tools Tab
  4. Under Error-Checking click Check Now
  5. Please ensure both options: 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'
  6. Then click Start
  7. A new prompt will pop up: Click 'Schedule disk check'
  8. Then restart your system

Please let me know the results of this test.

Thank you very much!

Hi Mainard,

SUCCESS!!! The CHKDSK found 3 bad clusters, which were, unsurprisingly, the areas where the scans were stalling. It replaced them, and Hey Presto! the scans now run successfully. You weren't wrong about bearing with CHKDSK, it took about 2 hours to run.

I can't thank you enough for your help with this. Without going into hyperbole, I think the support you Forum guys provide is fantastic. Especially for people like myself, who can just about spell pc :D:-)

I've learned so much just by talking with you, and following your instructions, if I keep this up I'll be Microsoft Certified one day :D

It's funny how 'beating' a computer can make people so happy. I let out quite the scream of screams there when the scan ran successfully.

I'm going to persevere with the ISO thing, as I'd like to get it running, even though the computer is fine now. Thanks again for everything and keep up the good work. It's very much appreciated.

Cheers.

Rob.

Hello Memphis,

I am glad that the CHKDSK is what fixed the issue. As per the ISOs some are not able to diagnose issues on some HDD's.

Thank you very much for you kind words

If any issues arise in the future please feel free to create a new topic and a friendly helper will assist you. Please include as much information pertaining to the issue as possible.

Again, thank you very much for your time and patience. Have a great day! :)
